I don't bow hunt, but why is there a fed tax on arrows? Is there one on ammo? I guess it's just one more thing to get our money.

Yes, there is a federal tax on ammo just as there is one all guns. It comes from the Pittman- Robertson Act. I for one, don't mind paying this tax because the money is actually ear-marked for conservation. However, I have been less than thrilled with what they have been calling "conservation" lately.

Here is a link to describe the tax.

Did you realize that there is a Federal Excize Tax on every arrow you buy? In 2007, it's $.42 per arrow (or $5.04 per dozen). This is a flat federal tax...you still end up paying sales tax as well. At the current rate of inflation, this tax will be $.72 per arrow by the year 2016. I guess they are trying to tax us out of hunting now...[V]

I realized it back in 1938 when they first started collecting the
    tax.[:D]

Well I am a bow hunter and we pay tax on toilet paper so why not arrows.
BTW I also waterfowl hunt too and to deer hunt and waterfowl hunt it costs:
    1. Combo Sportmans Fishing/Hunting Licence is $19.50
    2. Archery Deer tag for one buck and one doe is $26
    3. Habitat stamp $5
    4. Federal migratory waterfowl stamp $15
    5. State Waterfowl stamp $7.50(I think)
This is resident fees. Non resident fees are $hundreds$ as most of you know.

The Idaho fees are worse than that...the Sportsman Pacakage is right around $130...without any addtional tags.

If you are a hunter and conservationist the tax (Pittman/Robertson) is your best friend. PR funds has made possible more things than you can imagine. One "tax" i am glad to pay.

Just curious how you found this out? I just looked at a receipt from arrows I got a month or so back and all I see on there is standard ohio sales tax. Doesn't make a lot of sense for extra tax to be on arrows does it?
Maybe I should include the tax I wasn't charge on next years return, [;)]

That for a resident I assume? Ouch!! Illinois is generally higher with everything but not so bad for hunting compared to other states. But when you add up all the equiptment you need for hunting/fishing damn is it expensive to enjoy the outdoors.

You were charged it. I think the tax is collected between the manufacturer and the wholesaler/distributor. I read about it in an Archery Retailer magazine.
