What Carribean Islands have you visited ?
I have been to Aruba and the Dominican Republic. They were both very nice. I am looking for some ideas for the next trip. Thanks......

St Thomas, Antigua and Barbados.
I liked Barbados the best. Antigua was prettier landscape, to my eye, but the memories of Barbados are warmer.0 -
Skip the garbage on the Carribean and go for the magnificence of the Greek Isles. 0 -
St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. Marten not worth going back either. 0 -
Bahamas and Jamaica. Jamaica being the better of the two. Kinda weird flying over Cuba on the way there. 0 -

St. Thomas, San Juan, St. Croix, Barbados, Jamaica, and the Bahamas.
Old San Juan was probably my favorite because of the history, but all in all I really don't want to go back to any of them.
If you are thinking cruise, then go for the Alaskan or the Norwiegan cruises. More breath-taking scenery and less dope-smoking criminals.0 -
Skip the islands and go to Beliz. Very nice and they speak English.

The Cayman's twice and the Bahamas on a cruise once. Two dive trips and a Honeymoon dive package. Obviously Mrs. likemhot and I enjoy our dive time. Mrs. likemhot has also been to Little Cayman before we were hitched. We don't like crowds so we stayed on the North side of Grand Cayman for our honeymoon which was during the off season. We had almost the whole resort to ourselves. You know that bar drink they call "sox on the beach", .......... ooops never mind. We dove the WALL and have been to Sting Ray City before it was popular. That was a few years ago and we have heard the Cayman's have become much more touristy. Don't forget the monetary exchage rate, it can be a surprise.
I would love to take Mrs likemhot to the South Pacific for a dive trip maybe Fiji or Tahiti or a place called the Turtle Islands.0 -
We've been to most of the Carribean islands, but the one we enjoyed the most was Grenada. They love Americans there -- because our military saved them in the early 80's. There are signs still painted on buildings that say "Thank You America", and "Thank You 82nd. Airborne".
There are two monuments there remembering the US troops that were killed in the battle, one at the airport, the other at St. George's Medical School.
Grenada is not an easy destination on a cruise ship; we went there as a port substitution in '98 due to hurricane damage to one of our ports of call.0 -
When I was at Andros in the late 1970s they were talking about building a resort and opening it up to the tourist trade. I don't know if they ever did it, but I wouldn't mind going back down there as a tourist. 0 -
Jamaica and the Caymans. Jamacia was the trashiest place I have been by far. We docked at Montiego Bay which was a beautiful resort, then we went across the entire island to Kingston. We went to a rum distillery. Driving across the island we got to see a lot of things the tourist industry doesnt brag about. 0 -
Ive been to the dominican rep scary place the cabby that brought us to the resort was doing about 80 on back country roads. At the resort they told us not to leave the resort or we might be killed 0 -

Grenada's the only one I've been to and I've been twice. I enjoy myself there but I wouldn't recommend it as a tourist destination. I go to visit family.
It is Caribbean, warm, and small, English-speaking and relatively friendly. It has that going for it.
It is probably not as expensive as the more developed islands, but if you're looking for a tropical vacation on the cheap I'm sure you can do better. You'll certainly find cheaper air-fares. From the US west coast it's about $800 to get there and takes >24 hours.
It is not well-developed for tourists. The infrastructure is coming, but isn't really there yet. It's not like it's backwards; it's just a small country without a big economy. About the biggest thing going is the med school.
Its character has changed for the worse since 1998. Violent crime, while still not as prevalent as in some other places, has increased. I visited in 2000 and at that time my sister never thought twice about where she was nor at what time of day. Last time I was there (about a year ago), she didn't want me walking through certain parts of town at night.
It also looks a little different since Hurricane Ivan came through a couple years ago. About 50% of the structures on the island were badly damaged or destroyed. I guess that means they could really use your tourist dollars.0 -

My advice, stick to the tourist area's, the cops around those areas are better paid, and there are more of them. They know not to bite the hand that feeds them.
Last year I went, the difference is striking when around airports and tourist areas, the cops have M-16's, and out in the country, we encountered cops with empty holsters (note: they have two tiers of cops, identifiable by either a red or blue stripe motif on their uniform).
Jamaica has very strict gun control which doesn't work. The very first day I was there last year in the paper was an article "How to survive a shootout" or something like that. On the news were reports of guys sneaking into a police officers house at night, killing him and taking his guns, etc.
My uncle is pretty wealthy, especially by Jamaican standards, and has influence with the local politicians. He carries a 1911 concealed any time he leaves his house, legally. To get permission, he had to go before an entire council and argue his case.
My grandmother opted for the time tested home defense of 7 Rotweillers.
Your safe around tourist areas, don't leave them. My uncle has been shot at, and my grandpa there was murdered.0 -

St Croix, Nassau, Port au Prince Haiti, Santo Domingo Dominican Republic, Roosevelt Roads Puerto Rico, Guantanamo Bay Cuba. My cruise line had grey ships with numbers on them.
If you're into diving check out Blackbeard's. They take 15 people on a 60ft sailboat out of Miami. Once you are in the Bahamas area they pretty much go where everybody wants.0 -

...Our destination was St. Lucia, but for some reason we had to go down to Aruba, deplane and go through customs there. $20 U.S. seemed to be the standard bribe to avoid any hangups. St. Lucia was great, but off the resort property, the poverty was unreal. The folks with jobs at the resorts are really fortunate. They catered to our every whim and we tipped them well.
...The drug dealers pay the cops to let them onto the resort's private beach and pester you. You either pay the cops to get them to leave you alone, or just buy a bag from them. Either way, you pay to be left alone. We made friends with the druggies, and even visited their camp, back in the woods. Cathy was sure we were going to die, but we bought a few carved trinkets from them, took some pics and learned a lesson about how the other half lives. They whipped up these little coconut dolphins in about a minute.
