Just found a Winchester 1892 38 40

In my attic... Family heirloom and in great condition.. Trigger mechanism is now smoothly operating after a bit of lube and the gun itself looks a bit rustic but nothing a good clean can't fix.

Now... question is... The serial number on the gun is 111346.. How old is it?

    Just a tip, be very careful to not get to overzealous in your cleaning. Aggresive cleaning of antique firearms almost destroys their value.

    OH Crap... I used brasso right after finding it... Thought the darkened spots on the barrel were the result of idling about in a dingy environment.. The metal looks shiny now.. Thats bad isn't it...

    thats really bad brasso on a winchester don't use steel wool on your car

    just use sandpaper wherever you put the brasso to bring the metal back. Then get a draw file and take out any rough spots in the wood. [:0]

    The worth of that rifle is NOT counted in a hatful of dollars as some might see it. Clean it up as much as you want to, keep it lightly oiled and pass it on to someone who will do the same.

    Well.. in that case... I will be putting a few rounds through it tomorrow. Just bought a case of 38 wcf rounds for a reasonable price at a local gun dealer. Never occurred to me the gun was supposed to look as if it was buried for 100 years.. Looks rather sleek now, but I did kill the resell value.. crap.

    The first centerfire rifle I ever shot was a Winchester in .38-40 that my Uncle owned. The first centerfire handgun was his Colt SAA in the same caliber.

    Lukcy guy. Don't worry about its' value - its' worth is as an heirloom.

    .38-40 The ORIGINAL 10MM.

    Resale value? Cryin' shame someone without that thought in their head didn't find it. Cold blue it, sand and varnish the stock and tap it for a 4X Simmons scope. You'll enjoy it a lot more.

    Well, just opened my attic and SURPRISE!![:)][:0] Jessica Simpson was there holding 2 U,S, marked Colt single actions with a Henry 44 in a buffalo rifle case, also 1,000 rounds of 44 rim fire ammo, man u never know! what a Thanksgiving..[:o)] nambu
