Utah was the last state to use the firing squad in the famous execution of Gary Gilmore.
Gilmore was seated with a 6x6 inch piece of white paper pinned over his heart.
Five executioners were seated at a bench rest, 20 feet away. Each man was armed with a Winchester .30-30. One man's gun was loaded with a blank.
I must say, getting slammed in the chest with 4 .30-30 slugs simultaneously would be a great way to die. I bet you wouldn't feel a thing. Death, defined by the stopping of the heart, would occur instantly, assuming a couple of slugs hit the heart. It would beat the hell out of rotting away from cancer for a few years, or getting turned into a veg by strokes, and laying in the nursing home wearing diapers and drooling onto the sheets.
So I can't argue with the State of Utah. Give me the classic, the .30-30.
The Vikings had custom that I like. When a Viking warrior got too old to go to battle anymore, his eldest son took him into the woods and beheaded him with a battle sword. Then he got the Viking funeral. Beats hell out of Plan B and Plan C, listed above.0 -
