I was given a project last night
You might remember that my new nieghbors had me out in the woods with my shotgun the other night because they saw someone out there.
Well They called me again yesterday because they have a shotgun they want me to fix up for them. She has had it since she was 12 (about 30 years) and it has done nothing but sit in the closet for over 20 years.
It's an old Winchester model 37A youth 20 gauge.
It needs a plastic piece that is missing from the fore stock (actually the piece is there but is broken and I may be able to get away with useing a good glue on it and putting it back on) and a major cleaning and oiling (I may need to use a little steelwool on it to remove some light rust), but looks like it may be gotten back into shape as a shooter.
She knows nothing about guns and asked if I could get it back to shootable for her so she has something in case of somebody going on the property again
I told her that even though I am not a gunsmith that I would give it a go to see what I could do with it.

DON'T use any steel wool. Ruins the finish.
Oil, oil, oil, and more oil....with a wash cloth.0 -
I might be able the help you out with the plastic piece for the forstock. Give me a day and I will se if I still have some of those parts left.......TOM 0 -

Thanks. Like I said it may be able to be glued as it is all there but is in 3 pieces. It split right at the screw holes.
I also just noticed that it is missing the front bead site. But for what she is wanting it for I don't think that will be a big deal.0 -

I have allways been told that useing super fine steel wool with oil is the best way to remove surface rust like this and will not hurt the blueing if done correctly.0 -
Shotguns are pretty cheap, why doesn't she just buy a new one? 0 -

She doesn't want to dump a lot of money in this one she basicly just wants it in working order.
I'm not really going to work at the rust at all as it is only a small amount of surface rust and will not effect the operation of the gun.
I do need to take the trigger and hammer assembly abart and give it a good cleaning as all the dust and such is keeping the hammer from falling completely.
Like I said I'm only going to get it to shoot so it can be used.0 -
I wonder about a novice out with a shotgun at night,scares the hell out of me. I hope you give them training before you turn them lose on the public. I can see it now He fixed it and told me how to use it when they shoot the neighbors kid.[8D] 0
