Japan has been quietly building up its military beyond self defense strength for a while now. Whether this is response to China's build up or whether China's build up is response to Japan's has been a subject of hot debate in Asia, mostly unnoticed by the U.S. or most of the rest of the Western World. There is a rapidly growing minority of Japanese nationalist who want to have a rematch with China and think they could win by using the American hardware they have bought, keeping good relations with the U.S. and leaving the rest of the Pacific alone. They are hoping that between being war weary from Iraq and the Growing dis-satisfaction with China, that the U.S. would sit it out or even quietly support them. This getting beyond Nationalist fantasy is unlikely, but Pacific Asia is turning into an up and coming powder keg, and like China and Russia, no one in the Intelligence services or the Department of Defense has really been paying attention.

Their military hardware may have been US bought....but they gutted the equipment and put their own goods in them/modified everything.

They let Kawasaki and Mitsubishi loose on their F-16's...now they are called F-2's.

They have some funky bubble on the top of their C-130's....not sure what that is....but they have came along ways with their military hardware. They photograph EVERYTHING and have teams study it all when they get back home...then they make it better.

Biggun, I've been working with JASDF since 2000...the year they first put foot back onto Guam...the only US soil they took from us. At first they were bowing their heads and apologizing...was down right awkard. Then they morphed into Nationalism waving their flags as their pilots landed and taxied by.....now they are a fine tuned deploying military force.

Rising Sun Flag is flying again.

They also build their own P-3C's under licence. Nicer crew compartment than ours too.[:0]

Imagine that! And most believe the Japanese would never re-arm. [;)]

We've been pushing it quite awhile as a hedge against China and N. Korea.

eboydell, not only are you out to lunch on the bikes and cars, they make great:
    Cameras
    Stereos
    Swords
    Ginsu Knives
    Tractors
    Backhoes
    Power Tools
Brownings (and soon to be Winchesters)
    and the list goes on.

I also kinda doubt you have ever been there or you would know they are not little any more.
