First, Clinton gives North Korea nuclear capabilities. Now, Bush is giving them 1,000,000 tons of fuel oil or $300 million in "aid" in return for them to disable their nuclear program.

I actually think the deal reached could be a good one. It differs from the Clinton deal in one important aspect. In the Clinton deal North Korea was offered aid and two NUCLEAR REACTORS in exchange for NK giving up a nuclear weapons program. (stupid) In the Bush deal, North Korea is given fuel oil and must not have ANY NUCLEAR PROGRAM WHATSOEVER. North Korea must start dismlantling all of their plants and facilities immediately and must allow inspectors from the UN and America in at once. I would think Bush "the war monger" would be getting more credit from the "diplomacy left" and the "international law" world community. 0 -
I think perhaps China should take the credit for this shining 'deal'.
China...for her own devious ends..does not desire open warfare just at this moment...and getting her enemy to pay thru the nose to avoid it...looks like a win for her.0 -

What is the alternative?
We cannot fight a ground war in Korea, that leaves bombing the crap out of them and nuking them.
In case of conventional bombing, it is likely that the North will try to hurt South Korea as much as possible.
With nukes, Bush goes down in history as the greatest mass-murderer since Hitler and Stalin.
Neither option is very appealing to me.0 -

It is not that we can't in principle, but rather that we currently have a large % of our ground forces tied up in Iraq, most of those who are not are on R&R from Iraq.0 -

Before Iraq, I would have criticized this deal. Now that the US if fighting a full-on war in Iraq and the military admits that it can not come up with another 50,000 troops to send to Iraq, there's no way the US could engage in military action against North Korea at this time. Bush made the only call he really could.
Clinton made this same deal, and Bush ripped him for it. Now Bush has made the deal, and whomever comes after him will rip him for it.0 -

Clinton offered the same program to North Korea and they broke the agreement and made and tested a nuclear weapon. They currently have more than 1 nuclear bomb. Let's say they have 15 nuclear bombs made right now.
They agree to not make any more and get $300 million from the United States. They use the $300 million to fine tune their nuclear delivery system. They nuke the US.
there will be no deviation from North Korea's goal. If North Korea offered to also give the US back the USS Pueblo I would consider them acting in good faith.

Certain aspects of China's government is getting a little ticked off at the prosperity other aspects of the government is realizing as a result of their growing economy. There are some underhanded dealings and "bad things" (for lack of a better term) going on within the government as a result while they iron out their differences from within.
We agreed to overlook and not publicly condemn China for some of the "bad things" going on in their country resulting from their government rift provided that they came to the table to flex a little bit on North Korea. President Bush isn't the first President to "buy off" North Korea. Clinton did it too.
beneteau--What is your viable alternative short of going to war? I'm sure those crucifying the administration over this would speak out just as vociferously if Bush took a military approach to the situation. It's not about the decisions that Bush makes. It's about the fact that folks haven't gotten over the 2000 elections yet.0 -

What are you talking about? They aren't going to dismantle a nuclear reactor, just shut them down. Kim Jong-Il gets all that free oil courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer and if he decides later on that he wants a "better deal", all he has to do is kick the inspectors out (again) and restart the nuclear reactor (again).0 -
The deal that the Nortk Koreans agreed to says they have to disantle their nuclear reactors. Whether or not they do so remains to be seen. I dont think the deal is perfect but I think it could work. 0 -
warriorsfan--The deal is a phased "deal". The first part involves shutting down which would bring 50,000 tons of help from South Korea. Further phases involve dismantling, sealing and abandoning the nuclear sites. That would bring about approximately a million tons of aid from us. (minus the 50,000 tons coughed up by the South Koreans) 0 -

long?. Here is N. Korea with about a population of under 60 million
bluffing the U.S. with a population of over 300 million. BUT, they do have a decent Military with many troops. Why dont we have a decent standing Military? For what WE give away in "tribute" to rogue countries we too could be a true power and make demands. Instead, we want to "buy " our way out. Didnt someone once say "millions for defence but not one cent for tribute". Seems like the new American Chicken has been hatched in spades. We are being beaten down by low tech countries as we think the new tech is the "in thing" but it just is not working out that way as one can see. Techknowledgy is great, but it is the amount of troops taking and keeping ground that really counts.
And the meaner and leaner and amount of these troops is what counts.0 -

N.Korea is run by crazy, evil and just plain mean people. Any "agreement" we have/make with them will only mean that they will "honor" the agreement as long as they are getting their end of the deal. When it comes times for N. Korea to start honoring their end they will suddenly become very combatative and uncooperative AND BLAME IT ALL ON US.
