  The wood is factory walnut, not cherry. It has been sanded, stained, and refinished. Sanding is why it doesn't fit snugly now. Staining and refinishing provide the reddish hue. The initials are light enough to polish out, but then the receiver would have to be refinished.

  I have never seen walnut with that grain or color. My bet not walnut. Sanding the stock would't change the fit unless the ends were sanded (dont know why anyone would do that). Where is Bert H. to ID that wood, and the fact that winchester shipped these from factory With cherry wood. Definitly not original wood to this gun. But it is factory wood. Anyway, someone got a pretty good deal.
