Since the cost of prescription drugs is so outrageous, I thought everyone should know about this. Please read the following and pass it on. It pays to shop around. This helps to solve the mystery as to why they can afford to put a Walgreen's on every corner. On Monday night, Steve Wilson, an investigative reporter for Channel 7 News in Detroit, did a story on generic drug price gouging by pharmacies. He found in his investigation, that some of these generic drugs were marked up as much as 3,000% or more. Yes, that's not a typo.....three thousand percent! So often, we blame the drug companies for the high cost of drugs, and usually rightfully so. But in this case, the fault clearly lies with the pharmacies themselves. For example, if you had to buy a prescription
Drug, and bought the name brand, you might pay $100 for 100 pills.
The pharmacist might tell you that if you get the generic equivalent, they would only cost $80, making you think you are "saving" $20. What the pharmacist is not telling you is that those 100 generic pills may have only cost him $10!
At the end of the report, one of the anchors asked Mr. Wilson whether, or not there were any pharmacies that did not adhere to this practice, and he said that Costco consistently charged little over their cost for the generic drugs.
I went to the Costco site, where you can look up any drug, and get its online price. It says that the in-store prices are consistent with the online prices. I was appalled. Just to give you one example from my own experience, I had to use the drug, Compazine, which helps prevent nausea in chemo patients.
I used the generic equivalent, which cost $54.99 for 60 pills at CVS. I checked the price at Costco, and I could have bought 100 pills for $19.89. For 145 of my pain pills, I paid
$72.57. I could have got 150 at Costco for $28.08.
I would like to mention, that although Costco is a me mbership" type store, you do NOT have to be a member to buy prescriptions there, as it is a federally regulated substance. You just tell them at the door that you wish to use the pharmacy, and they will let you in. (this is true)
I went there this past Thursday and asked them. I am asking each of you to please help me by copying this letter, and passing it into your own e-mail, and send it to everyone you know with an e-mail address.

the name-brand companies make much less on the drugs than do the generics. While the ingredients cost the same, they must recover the cost of research and development of the drugs as quickly as possible. I believe they must release the formula to the public 2 years after it's put on the market. The generic companies just take that formula, assemble the medicine, and make mad cash on it after the other companies have paid researchers salaries for years of development. 0 -

The argument at the top of this post is idiotic. I am sure if you did the same cost of materials analysis on a $2,000 laptop you would find a few cents worth of metal and a couple bucks worth of plastic. If it is that simple, why don't you build your own laptop or make your own drugs? You have the formula, right?
As has been said above, R&D is the huge cost of the drug and not the ingredients. These days, to develop a drug, get through all the clinical trials and FDA approvals, and then market the drug a company can spend $1-$3 BILLION. Many times a drug company will spend $1 BILLION or more and then find out either the drug does not work or its side effects are so bad that it cannot be sold. And then there are the inevitable lawsuits.
Contrary to liberal propoganda the drug business is a tough business. It requires a tremendous and very high-risk front end investment that often does not see a return for 5-10 years. The only way to make a decent long-term return is to have so many drugs in the pipeline that individual failures are less impactful and the up and down cycles of the drug level out. This is why the pharma business consolidates into a handful of mega-players like Merck and Eli Lilly.
If you still think after reading this that the drug companies are killing it at the poor consumer's expense, you should put your money where your mouth is and take every dime you have and buy Merck (MRK) or Eli Lilly (LLY) stock.0 -

i think some of you may have missed his point, and are stuck on the drug companies, like i have been saying all along it is the pharmacies that are making the price so high, not the drug companies themselves, the price the company sell it for includes r&d, shipping taxes etc., did you know there is a shortage of teachers at pharmacy schools? what does this have to do with it you ask, because a graduating student makes more that the teacher who taught them, in the mid west they start at 65,000+ fresh out of school with a substantial cost of living increase every year, that pharmacist working down at your local pharmacy in the white coat may very well be making as much as some doctors, some of my customers who own their own pharmacy are millionaires from the business 0 -
