remingtion model four in 270

i'm having problems with a remington model four semi-auto 270 cal. it has a plastic piece that looks like a dust cover. it was not on the gun when i received it but was told about it. could this be causing ejection problems. if the gun is unloaded it seams to manually cycle fine. if i load a round into the gun and try to shoot it it will fire the round but the bolt wont close all the way to eject the shell. could this be caused by the missing plastic cover. i was told that it cracked so they removed it thinking that what was causing the ejection problems. if i play with the bolt long enough it will eventually close and eject the shell. any ideas. here is a pic of the gun with the plastic peice missing. now i dont know if this is just a dust cover but they thought thats all it was.

  Thats a Auto, are you useing reloads and are you keeping it clean??? Ive never owned one but have been told you realy have to keep them cleam and yes that plastic shield is to keep out dust

  I would take it to a good gunsmith so he can fit a new dust cover, and see if that is causing the problem.
