I tend to agree with you on futureweapons, way too melodramatic, but what do you have against mythbusters?

They lowered the center of percussion and the weight is half the Thompson's.
It looks good for vehicular use and clearing rooms, bunkers etc.
Automatic fire is said to be more effective than rapid fire.
I'm not charmed with the line of sight being 3-4" above bore axis.

I once read an article written by a veteran who fought in France during WW2. He told a story about a patrol his squad was doing.

It was almost dark, they were walking towards a treeline. When the lead troop got about twenty yards from the trees, a German popped from cover and fired a burst from a MP40 at him - hit him in six places from crotch to chest. He lived long enough to swing his M1 up and kill the German.

The old veteran said he couldn't imagine a troop being able to do that after being hit by a Thompson in similar fashion.

I lost interest in military side arms when they did away with the 1911.

My question is. Which 9MM are they using today?

    9mm Makarov
    9mm Luger
9mm Kurtz (short) Which is nothing more than a .380.

Or do they have a special 9mm NATO type round much like the 7.62 NATO (30-06)?

7.62 Nato is the same as .308 Winchester, also known as 7.62X51, it is not to be confused with 7.62X51R which is the european way to say 30-30 which is also known as 30 WCF. The 30-06 is also known as .30 Govt, 30-06 govt, 30-06 US and 7.62X63. It is not to be confused with the 30 army or 30-40 krag. It has never been known as 7.62 Nato.
There is no 9mm Nato, it is just known as 9mm Parabellum, 9mm luger or 9X19, it is not to be confused with the:
    9mm ultra
    9mm browning long
    9mm baynard long
    9mm bergmann-bayard long
    9mm steyr
    9X23 winchester
    9x25 dillon
    9mm action express
    9mm kurz
    9X17
    or the 380 ACP
