BlackRoses loves to feed the wild birds, as I posted our yard is full of Doves, red birds, bluejays, thrashers, finches, etc, We get three types of doves,, two of which I knew of, and the third I saw in the bird book that BR has, I had never in my 65yrs seen a GROUND DOVE, I looked out the window and Lo and Behold there was a pair of the little critters, about a 1/4th the size of a mourning dove, with a little redish beak and feet, mottled feathers around the head, that glisten green in the sunlight,

Have any of you ever seen these little doves?? Pretty little critters, to say the least..

Great to eat, and even more fun to hunt. A lot of people who have never went dove hunting think its the birds sitting on the power line thing. They have no clue as to how hard these birds are to hit.

    +1.

While I am not a crack shot by any means, I do pretty well at the trap and skeet ranges. However, I routinely use about 5 shots per dove bagged. Those suckers are hard to hit!

Five shots per dove is actually a pretty good average. Mine would be a bit higher. But dang I love to shoot them or at them....And what a breeze to clean...

We are only allowed 50 shells for our limit of 15 birds at the DNR fields. We have to shoot around 3 per bird to get a limit.

Clay bird shooting a dove hunting is totally different. I usually can bag 15 bird minimun on a bad day out of a box of 25. Of course my gun does all the work.

    Put down the .204, and try a 12Ga. 2-3/4" #7 1/2-8 shot!!You'll bring that average WAYYYyyy down...[;)][;)]

Maybe if I could find shot shells for the 204.......
I'm really not a very good shot with a shotgun. My clays usually break from hitting the ground....

On the way to my first dove hunt (10 years old) I asked my Pop how hard was it to shoot a dove. He said "look at how fast I'm driving" so I looked at the speedo and it said 65. Then he said "look out the window", there were 4 dove flying as fast as we were driving. I then understood that they were very small, and very fast.

Four days later we were hunting over water at sunset. The dove were comming out of the sun with a decent tail wind, you never saw them intell it was too late. I have been hooked ever sence that day.
