My bear hunt...pic heavy! UPDATE
The bear was weighed in at 305 lbs. Anyone know how to approximate his live weight from that? I'm guessing about 40-50 lbs of guts.
I have been "looking" for a bear for the last 10 years while deer hunting.
The last three years a friend and I have been watching the bears up in the Adirondacks. We set up a two man stand just inside his camp's land with a good view of two trails that have showed alot of bear sign. Last year paid off for him, this year for me!
Just before dark a good size bear came to the intersection about 50 yards from the stand. I was going to take the shot when he wandered through a clear area about ten feet wide. When he reached the clear area, he turned around twice and laid down (like a dog does). He laid there for a few minutes quartering away from me and I decided that I needed to take the shot then, before he decided to get up and go. Well, it took four shots to kill him dead. The first one, in the shoulder, apparently broke his back and pretty much anchored him but, he was still trying to get away on his front paws. It took three more to make him lay down for good.
I used my Marlin 336 in .35 Rem and Leverevolution 200 gr bullets. Four entrance holes and no exits that I can see, yet. He's down getting skun and butchered now. I hope to get the bullets back and see what they look like.
The funny thing is, I never got nervous or shaky until it was all over. It took four and a half hours to get him back to camp. There is a VERY rickety bridge between the stand that won't take the weight of a 4 wheeler so we had to get it that far by hand. That sucked, bad!
Anyway, my first bear story and here's a few pics. It weighs over three hundred pounds dressed. I don't know how much over yet. The scale we have only goes to 300 and it bottomed it out. Any one else get one this year?

sounds about right
350lbs
The skull measurement is all that really matters on bear. After the skull dries get those measurements.0 -
