Talking guns & politics at work: 4 vs. 1
Got on the topic today at work somehow. Somebody asked me how I know what I know about IL politics. Before I could answer, another guy I know well there (also fellow deer hunter and gun owner) chimed in for me. He told the other guy that it's because I'm afraid they're going to take away our guns!! *Loudly* I said you're right, and everything else that has to do with them. I said when you have a governor that is more concerned about banning high capacity magazines, while still allowing people to own 10 round magazines instead of passing an anual budget that should have been done June 1st, that's a problem! That's something that should enrage everybody! An entire state government dominated by democrats can't get the job done. I told them this is exactly what Illinoisans and every state employee deserves. This is exactly what everybody earned, whether you voted or not.
Anyway, the conversation went on to the point where I was thought to be an extremist because I'm willing to defend my home. I think they're extremists. (I have worked with them for 7 years and this has come up before)
One person jokingly told me I should move to Texas. I agreed.
Next person owns guns and hunts, but stores them at his parents house and will not vote and does not care about what our politicians do to our rights.
Next person says politicians' stance on gun control is at the bottom of his list of priorities. He has nothing against guns but doesn't care what they do (basically willing to let them take all rights without raising an eyebrow). His only concern was taxes and the 'holy dollar'. If they won't raise taxes, he'll vote for them. Although, he doesn't vote!
Next person doesn't hate guns. Thinks they're cool, has shot them with friends, but "doesn't want one around." Swears by the term assault rifle when describing just about anything. His wife doesn't like them either. Has ADT at his rural residence and feels that's enough for security. Thinks I'm an extremist and is "glad that the politicians want to protect him." Thinks concealed carry is a bad idea and worries about "all the nutcases running around with handguns and it's too easy to buy a gun, even though he hasn't bought any." And despite the fact that we live in about one of the toughest states to purchase a firearm.
So there you have it. I'm the only one prepared of the group and I'm an extremist.
I said in this area, most any confrontation could be easily settled and diffused verbally. But, if somebody breaks in, high out of their mind on drugs, and is obviously intent on harming us, they're going down. They thought I was nuts!! LOL!! I told them our politicians have you conditioned to fear firearms and you need their protection. They thought that was funny.
This is why we can't turn the tables in Illinois. When you have people that don't care at all and don't vote. When you have people you think you could easily reach out to but you can't. When you have people, gun owners no less, that would just assume sit on the sidelines than vote and watch their rights be taken away as long as nobody raises taxes. You can forget it. Neither side gets them. Instead of trying to understand why I'm passionate about the subject, it's easier to write me off as an odd ball and not care.
The conversation almost made me sick to be honest. I feel strongly about the subject and think everybody else should too, and you got people that simply couldn't care less one way or the other. It's a joke.
Just glad most of the rest of the country is on my side.

Workplace Rule Number 1: Don't talk politics at work. Rule Number 2: You're just wasting your breath and ruining your reputation. Rule Number 3: Even those who may agree with you don't have the guts to admit it in public. Rule Number 4: Everyone will walk away hurt. Rule Number 5: You will be the only one who loses in the long run. Rule Number 6: Get fellow shooters and hunters to join and contribute to the NRA. Rule Number 7: Regarding apathy and gun control, September 11th changed nothing.

Chris
Wow!
You got a lot of rules!0 -
And I even got the numbering wrong the first time!..Rule Number 8: It takes most people many, many years to learn rules 1-7.

My dad always said theres three things you dont talk about in a public setting, Religion, Money and Politics. Ive found hes mostly right on all counts. Thats what the internet is for! 0 -
And I was taught to avoid talk of sex, politics, and religion. Of course, since life is all about sex, politics, religion, AND money, what else is there to talk about??? Sports and the weather I guess.

Why not? We talk about it all the time and a lot of people slowly are turning to the dark conservative side. I've even got people to stop being ashamed of patriotism. We even got American flags in the office.

These are some sort of conclusions, these are not rules.

Right, so that they can negotiate another NFA.

This is again, is not a rule but some statement.
Vess1, looks like you might have gotten a bit too emotional there. Happens to everyone, it's not very easy to talk to people who have their heads up their rears most of their natural born life, but again, for the most part, you won't be able to convince them of anything. They have to come to certain conclusions on their own. And the best course of action with this type of people is just to convince them you're not radical, you're not extremist, you're just a nice feller who likes to shoot at paper targets and believe silly stories of American Revolution and Constitution, as long as you don't alienate these types. They are the majority who don't give a hoot, and the long term goal is to keep them on our side. If gun control is the last on their list, keep it that way, at least they won't vote for it. And there's no way you or anyone else can rationalize with them. It simply is impossible until their heads come out, which is a very very very rare event.0 -
Maybe it's a good thing that they don't vote. 0 -
Of course you're right. Don't take my use of the word "rule" too literally. My point is don't be surprised if your efforts backfire on you, both politically and professionally. As you surmise, I speak from experience.

Chris, I am just being a smarta55 with you. Though, if at my work it did backfire at me professionally it would only mean that I wouldn't want to work with such people there to start with. Where else but your workplace would one discuss such things? I understand that the world we live in now is upside down but it hasn't been always like this which means it's possible to do some other way. Lost my train of thought here. 0 -
If it wasn't safe to talk about it with them, I wouldn't. I couldn't give a damn about my reputation there. There is no room for advancement for about another 20 years, if even then. Everybody gets the same contract raises no matter how good of a job you do or what your opinion is. They don't give out our 'non-existant' bonuses. There is nothing to lose.
They really aren't bad guys and all would go to the range and have a good time, but for some reason they like ganging up on me because I keep a handgun at the ready.
I read about things. I know what's going on and what has gone on. I'm disturbed by why our elected representatives are so desperate to ban everything from us like we're 5 years old. I want to know why they want us to be defenseless against anybody.
They don't know who's for or against what. They don't know anything past what moves the Cubs and the Bears are making. They just don't care about anything else. Not important to them. They will never understand until they get into a bad situation and then they'll whine the loudest.0 -
I talk guns at work whenever the situation arises. If all it takes for Muslims to be bad is to not speak out against the violence perpetrated by their fellows, then what would it make us if we don't speak out in defense of our rights?
I've got nothing to hide and nothing to be ashamed of where my views on gun rights are concerned. I don't get violent or threatening, but I do tell it like it is.0 -

+1 But somehow the conversation always gets blown out of proportion and turned into bad jokes. I guess that's how some people need to deal with reality.0 -
I don't discuss guns at work but I have a guns screensaver and calendars and other items to show my support. 0 -
Panzer,
That's just as good, in my opinion.[8D]0 -
Wow, hearing all of this makes me real glad that I took this new job. It is my job to talk guns and hunting every day with everyone I come into contact with. 0
