i tip on service, i love to go out to eat. As long as they are friendly, i understand slow service, its not the waitress' fault the foods not done yet, or they have a bunch of orders, i used to work in a restaurant. My number one biggest thing is the drinks, keep my ice tea, or soda, or whatever im drinking full, they put soo much ice in there, which i dont mind, keeps it ice cold, but keep it full!

...Service dictates the amount I tip, to a point. I agree with you but they are at least there serving, that, deserves something. Great service, great tip, ok service, ok tip...BAD service and I explain to them why they are getting next to nothing. SERVICE is their ONLY job...PS: You know David is just a nice big teddy bear...[:D]

Why reward indifferent or sloppy service ?
Problem is...we as a nation have come to expect something for nothing...so service means not a damn thing..."gonna get that tip, anyway.."

Amazing..here in a nation promised by our 'leaders' able to survive as a 'Service Nation:...

This ol' girl had not found her calling, apparently. She would be better suited to working in a factory with machines instead of people, or maybe clerking the counter at the Driver's License office.

I still would have tipped her more than two bucks, but if I had, Dawnie would have snatched it back.

I usually scope out the waitress right from the beginning. I lay some money on the table so they observe it. Their call, if they want to earn a tip. I have went as far as going over to the waitress station ( where they keep the Sweet tea, Ice, etc . ) and doing the work myself. Pretty well closes the tip from happening. Other customers give me a look like WTH are you doing. Well I don't wait 10 min. to get my Tea filled up.[;)]

I understand that the "typical" tip is 15% of the meal total.

Waiters and waitresses that take the time to be courteous and treat us well will get excellent tips. Especially if they are just serving the two of us.

If they are bad, they don't get much at all. I hope they figure out why they got a lousy tip.

O.K. , I also enjoy 'eating out' (occasionally) , nothing worse than horrific service , not only will I NOT leave a tip , I will complain .
and on the other side , fantastic service gets a praise and a tip !!!
    Thanks !!!

We had bad service at a casino this past June and left the waiter a 16cent casino voucher.

Tips, or a gratuity, are a reward for the level of service received. Crappy service = crappy or no tip, period.

Sadly, I believe that tipping is being morphed into some sort of "right" for wait-staff, rather than what it was intended for, e.g. a way of showing gratitude for good service. I will stick to the original intent.[;)]

Dawnie is correct, Nunn is wrong.[:o)]

I let my wife decide on the tip. Since women are in the cooking and serving catagory they have a better sense of the quality of the food and service and what it is worth.

[Am i gonna die for saying that[?][:0]]

I am the first to prasie a waitress for a job well done..As for my drink If I still have food on my plate and I am chewing dont ask me if I want a refill just fill it up,if I am done eating then ask.....HELLO ITS ONLY COMMON SENSE and those waitress will score one on my books.now as for service being slow I understand they are busy, offer something like chips/salsa or bread and butter.

Keeping us inform is another great plus for a tip.
And yes tipping maybe the only pay they get but they sure better earn it,and as for the cooks if it is not right bygolly they are going to have re-cook it,

I got such bad service at a "Johnny Carinos" one night, that I left a small tip wrapped in a note explaining to the girl why she did not recieve/deserve more.
I don't think she had a clue she was doing anything wrong, it seemed as though she had had no training prior to being sent to wait tables, like Nunn said might just not have been her calling.

One waitress I knew years ago wore a button that said "Tip me or die of thirst". She was awesome.[:D]

I tell them why they are NOT getting a tip, and have been known to call the manager out to explain the situation. With some, if they don't know, they can't/won't fix it. A gratuity is based on the level of service they provide, it is NOT mandatory. I have left nothing, or up to a $10 tip on a $20 plate.

We were at Outback Steak house. I like to enjoy my food, and eat slower than anyone I know. I explained this to the waitress, and asked her to NOT put in my food order until I was done with my salad. I don't mind waiting. She said, "HUH" and I explained it to her a SECOND time. She said, "OK" so I took it that she understood.

I hate to be half way through a good salad, and have the main course brought out to sit on the table and get cold while you finish your salad. OR, you don't get to finish your salad.

Sure enough, halfway through the salad, here comes the main course. Not only was there NO tip, after talking with the manager, my meal (the most expensive steak on the menu) ended up being on the house, along with a coupon for a FREE blooming onion for my next visit.

You done right dawnie, sounds like the $2.00 was too much.
Keep picking up those tips if the service SUCKS.

I flirt and joke with ALL waitresses. *I* certainly don't want to serve the
general public day in and out.

Yesterday at lunch we watched as two men ate about 2/3 of their meals
    - THEN complained in was cold and ordered replacements and THEN
didn't leave a tip at all!

... I know the gal and she got her tip - but - I understand from Gale (who
used to be a hostess at El Torrito/Marina Del Rey, in college) has some real
    nightmare recollections!

... most of the time I'll side with the waitress - only met a couple I haven't
    liked - right A1?

Sorry Dawnie, two bucks is appropriate for lunch maybe, but just marks you as cheap for dinner. To make your point about service, leave $.20, that is an unmistakable statement about service. Waiting is a tough way to make a living, but good wait staff ends up in the best places with the best tips, gals like her, end in diners or needles. Poor service does not deserve a decent tip, unless you approve of welfare.

I dont send my food back like I used to,,cause i have nightmare where they will spit in the food cause they are pissed, and I dont want spit in my food so I will just wait till we are done and then talk to the manager,if I dont get satification from that I will email the company and most times wont go back.

We have gone to this mexican resturant when it was competiting with this other resturant and the service was awsome, but now that the other resturant is out of business their service sucks even after the lunch rush it is terrible, well now that other resturant is fixin to open again and my business will be back with them,,their food is much better and I never had bad service there.

the reason it closed was the owner/manager decided it was time to remodel so for the third time he set the place on fire and they final determined that it was arson. just cant do that kind of stuff, now it opening under a new owner.

I would have asked her if she was new...by not knowing the specials, it could mean she was new, or the specials were not ready for the wait staff (not decided, not printed up etc)....

Maybe she had a bad day, death of someone close etc....I talk to ppl....and if it "looks" like something is wrong, it usually is...Perhaps she was sick and couldnt get anyone to cover for her....

For the record, yes dawn I think you were wrong...We always tip, and if the service is not up to par, I ask what is wrong...you might be surprised at the answers..The tip we leave for good to great is about 20 percernt to 25...decent service 10 to 15..

Cripes even at buffets where all you get is your silverware and drink glasses refilled, we always tip....usually a couple of bucks at least...Word gets around quick if the customers are "cheap" or "hard to please", just as word getting round bout the great customers....
The wait staff will go out of their way for a great customer, and I am not talking about a big tipper...I am talking about a nice person, pleasant etc...where as a grumpy hard to please person doesnt have to send food back to be spit into if you get the drift...

+1 i tip at the buffets, especially if they keep my drink filled.

Scott - you seem to get plenty of interaction with the (good looking) wait staff, at least from my observation.

Bad food/bad service/bad table - any of those get no tip, unless it's a cute waitress and she flirts with me.

I treat each dining experience as unique, and tip based on my feelings about that meal.

I should not have to pay because the waitress is having a bad day. When you perform a public service function, you are not permitted bad days.

Dawnie... you did almost right. "Right" would have been zero tip and a complaint to the manager, at least from my perspective. I believe David's assessment to be incorrect. My name is "zipperzap".

One of my buddies uses a special way for getting the servers attention, every time she comes by he will leave a dollar on the table, fill up our drinks add a dollar, ask how things are going add another dollar.

I personally let the service stand as it is, if you do no serve my table properly you will not be rewarded, if you serve properly then you will be rewarded greatly. I have been known to leave a $10 tip for a $6 meal if the service is right. If the service is especially fine I will also find the restaurant manager just so I can praise the server.

As for the comments that you have to pay the cook's also so you can't take it out on the server. Well a restaurant is a team, if one member of that team fails then the whole team fails.
