British national seeks concealed weapon permit

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A British national who has lived in Kentucky for 15 years is challenging a state law than bars non-citizens from carrying concealed deadly weapons.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit on Wednesday on behalf of Alexander M. Say, who contends Kentucky lawmakers should not have passed such a law last year.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Louisville, challenges the citizenship requirement.
"The federal government controls whether foreign citizens may live in the United States and on what terms," said Jack Harrison, the attorney representing Say.
Harrison said no federal laws require U.S. citizenship for people to be licensed to purchase, carry, transport, or carry a concealed deadly weapon.
"Kentucky's law discriminates against people who are lawful permanent residents," he said.
The lawsuit seeks an injunction barring the Kentucky State Police and Jefferson County Sheriff's Department-the two entities that would have to approve Say's license application-from enforcing the citizenship requirement.

Either that on unconstitutional. Why doesn't he apply for citizenship and renounce his British allegiance? But no, now he's challenging the Constitution and laws of the land. I say screw him, and kick him out for wasting tax-payers money.0 -

I feel the law is for citizens, not 15 year guest. 0 -
I'm no legal or Constitutional scholar, but I completely agree with the sneakyrussian on this one. If you want to take full advantage of the rights and priveleges afforded American Citizens, become one. 0 -

So if he's legally here for 15 years, been working, paying taxes, etc. he has no right to self-defense? If he's here, as the article states, legally, then he has been paying into a system for 15 years and has not had any of the rights and privileges of an American citizen. Wow! I agree with you! Look at the free income and medical care he has missed out on for these last 15 years by declaring himself and not being here illegally! You're right. He's too stupid to own a gun! Ship him back to jolly old England right now! Living in KY myself, I fully support him and hope he gets his CCW!0 -
He should have applied for his citizenship a long time ago.But having said that if he is here legally I see no wrong in him carrying legally. He should apply right now for naturalisation,I had to wait eleven years for mine. 0 -
There are plenty of British nationals with the name Mohammed. Just wondering. 0 -

You and I will have to agree to disagree on this one, man. I'm not saying he's a mooch. I'm just saying he's not a citizen. Look at it this way. American citizens who have been convicted of a felony most likely don't have the "right to self-defense" as you put it. Why should a non-citizen?
Like I said, we're not going to see eye to eye on this topic. But neither should allow a disagreement to make us disagreeable. Agreed?0 -

The Constitution protects rights of citizens, not foreign nationals. If you want full protection -- dump your foreign allegiance, become US Citizen and only then you actually have a right to go and change the system.0 -

Nothing wrong with him carrying, but there's something substantially wrong with him going to ACLU to sue the state. For that I would deport him the hell outta here, along with most of ACLU lawyers.0
