tailgating
very annoying when people get on your tail while you're driving in solid traffic going roughly the speed limit with about 10 miles of cars in front of you, i never understood why people would do that. in the city it doesn't really bother me 'cause if they rear-end me i'd end up with a sore neck for a few days and a few thousand dollars in my pocket but on a highway moving at 65-70mph it might be quiet a different story...
from my road trips outside CA i only notice that people with CA license plate do stupid things but my view is slanted against CA drivers so i might not be noticing how most locals drive.
well, i am just wondering, is just a east/west coast /third world kinda thing or do people drive like morons everywhere in the States?

no, i am San Jose area, so i drive around bay area a lot, but i did travel a lot through CA and when driving through LA, OC, and SD counties i'd just try to stay as far as possible from everyone to keep myself from agitating. and yeah, i agree, LA drivers are pretty damn unsafe.0 -

it seems that over here, in greater SF Bay Area, people get lobotomized during driver's exam. i just don't get it, how would it get one anywhere faster by going two feet from the bumper of a car ahead when that car has miles of traffic ahead of it...

Here in Houston they are just as wonderfull. Outside of the cities though the drivers do things I've never saw before I moved here. They will pull on the shoulder if you are traveling faster then them to let you by. Cities just suck. 0 -

If the case is #1, then the tailgater is the moron, I am always amazed by city drivers who will hump your tailpipe when there is an 18-wheeler or something up ahead preventing you from going any faster even if you wanted to.
if the case is #2 then you are in the wrong for not yielding to faster traffic, which is the law.0 -

hm. i'd love to hear about CA in 1950-60's. i've been here first in 1989-90 and then moved permanently in mid-90's, and i could already see the difference. just wonder what was it socially that drove this state to what it is now... well, actually i do know already, just wondering why noone stood up against it.0 -

that doesnt piss me off as much as people that pull out in front of you on the highway when there's no one behind you. people cant wait 30 seconds for me to pass they have to cause me to sometimes slam on the brakes or fly around them or sometimes just take the Cruise off. regardless it pissed me off. 0 -
Haven't been to California for a while but these days, Florida gets my vote for aggravating driving.
Traffic moves at 70 with less than a car length between cars. If you try to leave a car length space, someone will jump in.0 -

That's an understatement! I have to make two trips a night into SF with an 18 wheeler. Too many candidates for speed bumps and organ donors, and the Bay Bridge construction ain't helping any. The new on ramp to the lower deck is almost completely covered in skid marks now, and it's only been open for a month. It's soooo temping to clean up that gene pool.[}:)]0 -
I routinely get people tailgating me on my 20 mile drive from home to work and back, and I usually drive around 5 to 10 MPH over the limit. 60 isn't fast enough? 0 -

What you are doing wrong is impeding traffic flow. Move the hell over as you are not paid to enforce traffic laws.
The American Autobahn is a copy of the German Autobahn and can handle high traffic speeds. The weak link in the chain of transportation is peoples' ability and ego. Slow drivers keep right. Simple huh?0 -
If I'm out in the left lane running five or so miles over the speed limit while passing a slow driver in the right lane and you get bent over it.....TS. I really don't care how fast you want to drive, or if you pass me, but stay off my butt. Ego? I think not. When I finish my pass and return to the right lane you're welcome to the fast track. 0 -

I'd avoid Colorado if I were you. In Colorado, if you are in the left lane impeding traffic, even speeders, you are in violation of the law. The state has not given anyone except designated law enforcement officers the right to monitor and enforce speed limits in the state. No, you can't be a self-designated LEO.0 -
This is a very common practice throughout Texas. The shoulders on many highways are almost a full lane width and 4 out of 5 drivers will pull over for you. Texas is just one of those states where civility and consideration are taught and practiced.quote:Originally posted by Kodiakk

I am not much of a mechanic, but I have some ideas for dealing with idiot drivers.
Reservoir of used motor oil with a solenoid-activated valve at the bottom. Small tubing runs from reservoir to threaded fitting in exhaust pipe. Wire runs from solenoid to switch on dash. Someone gets too close and won't back off, just give him a dose of thick nasty blue smoke.
One could also rig up a similar system to discharge something nasty directly at the following car.
For slow-pokes in the fast lane, I would love to have a pair of remotely-activated automatic paintball guns mounted behind my grille.0 -

I've been known to let someone get really close up on my bumper and then tap the brakes -- not enough to do anything but flash the lights (IOW, no differential of speed), and watch them in the mirror.
The expression on their face is usually priceless... sometimes they give the finger, in which case I call *CSP (Colorado Hwy Patrol) and report road rage.0 -

Sometime an easier and less dangerous way of scaring a tailgater with your brake lights is to just momentairly turn on your parking lights (unless you are already running with your lights on). You rear lights will light up, although not as brightly as your brakes lights would light up. But sometimes that is enough to startle the tailgaiter into thinking you have just hit your brakes and they will get off your a$$.
Either that or hit your brakes for a milsecond and then stomp your gas pedal. The two actions kinda cancel out the hitting the brake part so you are not actually coming close to causing an accident.0
