i'm not very computer inclined, i just need to make sure linux would be easy enough for me to learn, also, i have a dell photo printer that scans, copies, faxes, with vista i have a simple program i run that lets me control the functions of the printer very easily, would linux have a similar interface with my printer? i'm sure i can work out the technical difficulties with my computer genius friend, but i just want to get some other opinions about linux based operating systems in general, how "user friendly" are they? are there any major compatablity issues, i need to store music, browse the internet, mostly basic tasks, i am a college student so i need to be able to create documents, i've always used microsoft word, is the linux based equivalent comparable? i dont use my laptop for much more than basic stuff, but vista just has so much extra crap, i would prefer a more streamlined OS, but it would have to be able to provide my basic needs.

im a little nervous about switching operating systems, especially since i have had this laptop less than 48 hours and already i can see performance issues, is switching to linux going to really help me out or should i just adjust my current OS to fit my needs.

this was way too long and unfocused, but basically, how much better is linux really? sounds great, open source, nothin you don't need, effective updates, less issues with viruses, optimized system performance? are there any negative issues?
