Need back porch security
Daughter's family recently has been finding cigarette butts inside the screened in back porch in the mornings. Sometimes just ashes, sometimes butts. So far no harm done, but you never know, and they have 4 girls, all 5 and under.
I'm wondering if somebody can point me towards some kind of security camera, nanny cam, or something that could record a few nights until something shows up. I'm not too familiar with the technology (my first impression would be to go old school and put on some cammo and sit in the bushes, but we all have day jobs), and a couple of quick internet searches show you can run up into a lot of money in a hurry.
Anybody have any ideas about a relatively inexpensive camera system that could record a whole night? Maybe with a motion sensor or something? I'm totally clueless. Any advice would be appreciated.

Search "wireless security cam" on ebay. I've gotten several from there, rather inexpensively. 0 -
Clover Black & White Outdoor CCD Camera. They are rather cheap and work good for $80.00.
Easy to hook up to any VCR. But you must set the VCR to record. Which can give you up to about 8 to 10 hours of recording when set on SLR speed.

I have one connected to a regular VCR that is set to record each night from 10pm until 6am (our normal bed time) that recorded the scum bags stealing two of my 4-wheelers. Crystal clear and the LEO (if you wish to call them that) told me that they do not investigate stolen ATVs.
You can also team the camera with the Clover Time Lapse VCR. Which goes for $300.00 but allows you to record up to 1280 Hours with a T-160 tape.

If they are leaving cigarette butts. Collect a few without touching them and save them in a paper bag. Plastic is not much good for evidence collection.

Deer camera would word ok, provided the perp doesn't have time to take it out. One of the Harbor Freight cameras is ok if you have a spare dvd or vhs recorder, but detail isn't great at a distance. 0 -

first order of business would be to find out what is going on...any other sign around area of unwanted intrusion...active watch by a family member or trusted friend with rest of family locked inside..prefer active resolution over passive one before something bad happens...maybe a stupid simple answer, maybe not 0 -

Refuse to be a victim!!! Put an end to this ASAP!!! He might be harmless but he might be a sicko who, once the thrill of sitting on you porch has passed, could move on to the home and the girls. If he is smoking on the porch then he might want to be found so don't confront him!
1)File a Police Report today! Ask the local LEOs to keep an eye on the place. (works best in a small town)
2)Get her a dog. Doesn't have to be big and nasty but certainly vocal and little paranoid.
3)Trail Cam is fine but do it NOW! I'd prefer a motion activated flood light.
4)Make sure your daughter or son-in-law has a firearm and knows how to use it.

Make sure they ask their neighbors if they have seen anything or if one of them secretly smokes and is comming over to your daughters house so they don't get caught by their loved ones. Just another thought but take a vacation day from work and spend an all nighter by the back door and wait to see who comes. Just make sure you have some way of defending yourself just in case. 0 -

A motion detector floodlight is about $13 from Lowes or Home Depot. Take down the back porch light, install that in its place. 0 -

Nope. Granddaughters are 5, 3, 2 and 2 weeks. Daughter doesn't get out much, and wife is staying with her, so they would know if it happened any time the girls are up (appx 6:30a - 8:30p).

Job 1 is to install motion-detector light, and possibly an oldschool intruder alert (cowbell) to alert son-in-law to any activity in the back yard.
And several have mentioned a game camera. Not being a big outdoorsman I hadn't thought about such a thing, but that is an excellent idea.0 -
