car registration public information ?

anyone know if i can find out the registered owner of a car from their license plate number ?

  In many states this is public info. However, you would have to buy the info from someone who has it, and that is not always easy. Lawsuits against ChoicePoint and several others have forced the data vendors to be selective about who they sell info to. You typically need to be a business and have to give a valid reason why you need the info.

  1) Some DMVs will do that if you go there in person and pay a fee.
  
  2) When I need that info, I get it from a buddy who owns a wrecking yard.
  
  3) Your car insurance company can also give it to you if you're buddies with them.
