Wadcutter ammo is for target shooting. Makes really nice clean holes in the paper targets, good for scoring your shooting.

+3 I have one of the S&W model 52-2 wadcutter target pistols. Lots of fun to shoot and puts them in the center of the target. Neat little holes, make nice cloverleafs![:0][:D]

The use is in the name wad cutter- they cut a nice wad out of the target with no rips that are easy to continue into the next ring, thus a friend in the butts could inflate your score. The flat shape would make them good for shooting someone, except the hollow base and soft lead prevent shooting them with high perssure/velocity loads, so they are target ammo.

Local leo's used to use them dispatching animals, like the ones that got hit by cars bad. The wadcutter would not ricochete, it'll just flatten out.

Otherwise, like said, its to cut clean/round holes in paper.

In the .45, we use semi-wadcutters because full wadcutters won't feed.

I sold my 52-2 about a year or so ago. I loved that gun, but now I'm stickin with .22 and .45 for bullseye.

Might still have some hollow base heads layin around.
