It seems to me, if I recall my history correctly, that (at least some of) the Indians did attempt some restrictions. But they were too unorganized and weak to stop it. Kind of like the U.S. Govt.0 -

If the Indians had any brains, they would have united, and met the Pilgrims with arrow fire, rather than platters of turkey.
In fact this is what happened to the Viking settlers several centuries earlier. Part of the reason their settlement in Vinland failed was the Indians were hostile.
Look at Asia. Westerners took over China and many other countries. Westerners were making big inroads into Japan by 1600, there were priests all over the country, many Japs had converted to Christianity.
Of course the goal of the Portuguese was to take complete control of the country. The Japs figured out what was going on, and ran all the Westerners out, killed the rest. They made it a capital crime to be a white boy in Japan, and for several centuries, if a white boy was shipwrecked in Japan he was killed on sight.0 -
from what I understand, the indians in north/south dakota killed white folks on sight also.

I still think there is a point here. The Indians failed to unite against their unwanted immigrants and those immigrants took over their land. If we do same thing as the Indians wont our invaders take over too?0 -
Another point of difference seldom noted, is that while most cultures we've messed with manage to maintain at least a semblence of their identity; even while living in a pseudo-assimulated society.
Nowadays, short of Andy Griffith reruns, I can't seem to find a single Indian anywhere, certainly none that are full-blooded. I don't have any problem at all finding Indian Indians, or Latin Americans, Italians, Mormons, Russians, even one Australian who still says "Mate". Shucks, just about all of them still possess at least a little of their former cultural identity.
Why not American Indians?
But then again, I live mighty close to one edge of the Trail of Tears. On the other hand, if you live in the south-eastern part of the U.S. I guess you do too.

I suggest you go to Alaska. Plenty of full blooded natives there and they retain their culture.

Granted, and I know there are tribes on reservations out west as well. But it seems to me these are the exceptions, rather than the rule.
I live and was raised in a county of about 22,000 inhabitants, 14,000 or so in the county seat, which has a good sized university. And I simply cannot recall seeing even one Indian, who was apparently an Indian. And I know that just a couple of hundred years ago, the Shawnee and other major tribes lived hereabouts, and have even researched some of them fairly comprehensively.
Unless they were totally assimulated in such a short period of time, I simply cannot figure out where they've gone. Nor can I understand what would have made them so easily assimulated, when other cultures go so much more slowly. Maybe we just subjugated them so thoroughly that we destroyed their very cultures. And that isn't something of which to be proud.
I'm sure the problem is one of my lack of understanding....but it is a thing I've noticed time and again.
And finally, I did a good deal of 'missionary' work in Ontario in the early 70's, and met lots of full-blooded Indians. And found them to be equal to anyone I've ever known as to quality and willingness to make friends.
In fact, can you recall the prettiest girl you've ever met or seen in your life? Even counting television? Well, I can, and she was a 15 year old member of the Slave tribe, which again, I met in Ontario.
And no, no pow wows....although I've been privileged to be in church with some of them.

I used to date a 15 year old Tlingit indian(I was much younger guys). She was pretty hot I thought. Hard to find ones with good teeth though, at least around Juneau where I lived. 0 -
I work with a guy that is 100% native american.
One of the nicest guys youll ever meet. Iv asked him lots of questions about how he feels about the history of native americans and the whites and all those sorts of questions.
He says he could care less about all that! It is what it is and he doesn't ever give much thought about it.
The only time ive ever seen this guy get upset at anything was when someone tried talking spanish to him. Man he got pissed and just said I aint no f-ing mexican, I am an american, man I speek english, he just sort of chuckled, but you could tell he was offended....0 -
If there is to be a hope for American culture to survive...you better believe 'we' are going to have to unite.

they're around. I saw them often enough in omaha, and while wandering around in colorado and oklahoma. where they're all at is on the reservations.
one time a mexican girl I knew was going out with an indian. he moved up to the Winnebago indian reservation, so I took her up there to see him. they happened to be having a powwow later on that day, and although I didn't want to go (didn't have a reason to) and didn't ask, I was told that I wouldn't be allowed in because I'm white.0 -
I'm within about 8 miles of a whole bunch of native Indians.

Man we got Indians in Oklahoma. And there's alot in NM and AZ too. They even have Indian language radio stations.
The Indians around here don't complain much about "the white man" anymore. In fact they invite us to thier Casino's. The Commercials say "make it a million dollar nite". But I've never heard of anyone winning a million dollars. Somehow I don't think that's what they're talking about.0 -
