Of the chioces I would say M-1 first! They will never go down in price and are the tuffest to find (expecially good ones)!

I believe the AK to be a better combat rifle than the AR and the ammo for them is less expensive as well. So if I had niether then I would go with the AK first. But since I think most people would be happy with a rommie WASR-10 AK if you look around you might be able to get both the AK and the AR for not much more than $1000 and then you would have both![;)]

Here's the thing: I already have an M1, all USGI parts. As far as AK being a better rifle -- let's not go there. I am looking at .223 Arsenal AK or an AR, which one -- I don't know yet, just a good AR, maybe Colt, maybe Bushmaster, maybe Rock River, or maybe even drop the dough on Cobb.

If you are set on .223 then definatly go with the AR rather that the AK-74.

I was not trying to start nothing with my comment about the AK. You asked for an opinion and in my opinion that is how I would make my choice.

But I am not sold on the .223 model of the AK-74 (but I have never shot one either), so that would definatly change matters on my choices.

I like AKs but if I could only make a choice between the 2 rifles I would get and own an AR. The M1 is in another class.
223 is cheaper than 762x39 if you buy comparable quality.
It isn't fair to rate price between steel case wolf to quality brass loads like from LC.
I just bought 500 rounds of barnaul 223 steel case for 100 total.
I think 762 is the same or more for steel Russian brand ammo.

There are far more options in what you can do with a AR than there are with a AK. With just a change of the top end you can have a totally different rifle, from a belt fed .22lr to a single shot .50 BMG. So out of your choices I would go with the AR and then start collecting uppers as time and funds allow.

In the light of some last posts, here's the situation: I've got just about an equal amount of dough to get a decent ar-15, a good m1, or a more or less functional ak. what would you spend a grand on out three? (I already have a very good M1), so I am leaning towards a very good AR.
Having come from a commie state could not have either AR or AK, it's a tough choice between the who. It looks like AK's are going up in price (good AK's that is, like the Arsenal ones), so it kind of makes sense to get one of those, or even a POS (but a case of) Romanian ones, but on the other hand, AR looks like a much better rifle, so, for a, well, certain situation, it makes more sense to have an AK.

Basically, the question is, given you have some extra money, what would you get: AR, AK or an M1?

Yes that is a bit much but as stated the prices are rising rapidly. I got my Arsenal Milled SAS-M7 in early june and paid just under 1,200.00 for it. If your want a good Arsenal milled AK, you'd better hurry as they are stopping production on the cream puff models and prices will continue to climb. It'll only hurt for a little while[;)][:D]

+1 buy both. Or better yet get an AR and buy a couple AK kits. Can always build them later.

.223 ammo is obscenely expensive right now.

I would look at the AR180 made by HOWA or Costa Mesa. Stay away from the Stearling. My 2 cents [8D]

    Get the AR.
The thing I like most about the AR is you can do so much with 1 lower receiver. by changing the upper, you can have a .204 ruger scoped varmint rifle, an A-2, an A-4, a 6.8, a 6.5, whatever you want.

    AR

    in minutes

    they can be turned into

    a

    50cal single shot
    204 ruger
    22lr

and im sure there are some more
those are the few that i have looked at

Info added. if you reload the AR will be super cheap,I dont know that i have ever seen any bulk reloadable brass in 7.62x39? then again i have never looked nor will i ever own an AK. have a SKS and think they are the way to go for 7.62x39. I havn't seen it for a while i buried it along with 2000 rnds, for when they come for me and i run out of .223

I'd get another M-1 if I were you.

But if I was really in your situation, I'd save a little longer and buy the short barreled M1A from Springfield - 7.62/.308.

Instead of an AK or a an AR, you might want to think about those new .223 Galils being produced by Century. I cannot speak towards their quality, but they do look nice.

    AIM has some here: http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Galil_Sporter_.223_Rifle.html
    galil.jpg

But if those don't float your boat, then I would recommend an AR.

I have always heard that an AK will eat anything and an AR is finicky.
