This guy needs a drink and a vacation, in that order. Hope he doesn't hit burnout. He sounds like one of the good guys to keep.

Maybe, but he's an astute judge of human nature. He just described the community I work in to a T.

The uncomfortable thing about his rant is that he is correct. We need more dedicated people like him who are willing to do an under appreciated job. I just hope he doesn't get burned out to the point that he packs it in and quits. I just recently read a thread about an obituary in a paper about the "death of a once prominent citizen who had the respect of all- a Mr. Common Sense." Seems that nobody much went to his funeral as most of the townspeople had never heard of him. Most of those that had known him well had already past on.

Its a tough job, I for one would not have the patience to put up with the personal abuse that officers have to face from ignorant people. I respect them and support them completely.

That's all of our communities. That's why every department that I know of is having a very difficult time hiring qualified people. Even the major cities like Houston can't find qualified people. Why put up with the BS for lower wages when you can get a job in the private sector that pays twice as much without the headaches.

Unfortunately we seem to have an unlimited supply of dumb people who think the government is their tool for taking care of stupid problems and stupider personal feuds.

    It's a vicious cycle:
dumb people turn good policemen away from the job,
we get stuck with the rambo wannabes who'd rather run around with machineguns acting tough than do police work,
we start to dislike the police more,
    more good cops leave,
    etc.

Bottom line is---Protect and Serve the People---it doesn't matter if it is petty, or childish. That is your job, you work for the people If you dislike 90% of your daily duties the best thing to do is just quit.

he said quote:I know there are jerk cops

Cops in a community are a cross section of the people in the community. There are good and bad. If 20% of the people in your community are scum it is a sure bet that 20% of the cops in the community are scum.

Good thing more LEO's don't share your views. [;)]

pretty much sums up the point that so called "LEO's" see people they are paid by as a cattle.

I think he is right. I know that sounds like the city I work in.

I've got almost 17 years, next month is 17, with the city and I hope I can stay another four years and get my daughter out of high school so I can retire and go do something else before I get runover by a drunk or shot by some 12 year old trying to prove something.

SuburbanNoize : I'm here to say that I'm glad you chose to be a cop! We're lucky to have someone as thoughtful as you. Fortunately the majority of cops are good like you! You're in a people profession and that brings lots of mind games. I was a teacher for 34 years and saw the same stuff (minus most of the violence and usually unarmed) dealing with the underlying issues people have can really take its toll. Hang in there - we need you!

Real easy to see by responses that you've never walked in this cop's shoes. Read Good Cops / Bad Cops forum. Then pray your ass off that this guy responds to your 911 call.

HobbyGuy, nice going, once again, very typical that of a "peace officer". you've already shown that you have poor reading comprehension, are insecure, are an egomaniac, got a pretty bad case of narcissism, i'd start looking inside of yourself for answers to your problems.
