stock refinishing
Does polyurethane and other type of finishes help in redusing the weather effects on laminated stocks or can the unfinished laminated stock be ok without any finsh {natural wood feel}?

Ok all you bench buffs.. I have the stock and fore stock off a Winchester single 410 all sanded and ready for refinishing,. What kind or brand of stain should i use, i want a dark look, and i want to cover it, spray it, with a deep looking urethane kind of top coat.
If you have a Winchester model 1200,, that's the finish i would like to obtain.. I have done the tongue oil years ago but was not happy with my ability. Yes i have all winter to do this..:):)0 -
When refinishing a stock is there a product or a way to acheive a no gloss or matte finish. I have refinished 3 rifles, 2 using tru-oil and 1 with lin seed oil/ mineral spirits. I am pleased with the results so far but for this project I want to use an ebony stain and end up with a matte finish. 0 -
Anybody have old (wooden) stocks laying around they want re-finished? I like to refinish them in my spare time, plus my sons like to help me out, which is always a good activity. I'll do it for free if you don't mind non-professional results. I'm just looking to improve my skills for fun.
Forgot to mention you probably don't want me doing one if it has any design in the wood, like checkering, etc. I'm talking smooth wood only, and all I do is sand it down to get surface scratches out. Then I put a natural (neutral) stain on, and cover with a shiny laquer if desired.0 -
Is there hope that I can get my stock and forearm to match? First photo shows inside, second shows outside.

Try Helsmans Sparthane, it comes in a aerosol can and is made by minwax. Lowes carries it. Its geat for checkering, as apposed to brushing it on which fills in the checkering. I usually apply 5-6 coats and in between each coat i smooth it out with 1000 grit paper. It should come in varying shines. High gloss, gloss, satin, flat. 0 -
You can bust the shine off of most finishes with OOOO steel wool and a good wax.
Brownells also sells a Glaze Buster, but the wool and wax will work just fine....
As with all things, go slow and with very light pressure at first...........0 -
You can get a matte finish with true oil. If you buff with 0000 steel whole or high grit sand paper <1000, if you take your time and not get to deep and heavy with the sanding you will get a matte finish. 0 -
Go to an old fashioned hardware store, ask a guy who's as old as your grandfather for some rottenstone. He'll tell you how to use it.

Stain it with ebony stain only, then proceed with your linseed oil. after about 4 mos. of linseed dull it with 000 wool and youve got a great matte finish.0 -
Go to brownells, and pick up some of their stock rubbing compound. Once you've got the oil built up and cured, hit it lightly with the rubbing compound. This will smooth out the finish and knock down any imperfections. (NOTE: be sure your finish is thick enough and fully cured or you can rub through the finish). That will leave a satin finish. If you want it to have more of a shine and depth pick up some of their Triple-F and do the same thing with it as you did with the rubbing compound. If you want it back gloss, pick up some of their Five-F and polish it back up. All that will give you any finish you desire if you choose to have a top coat of finish product on it.
