House Republicans stand strong against overreaching gun bills in House Judiciary Committee
As a promised follow-up on proposed legislative action to pass the "one-gun-a-month" bill, I am happy to report that House Republicans stood strong and voted this and a related measure down in Tuesday's House Judiciary Committee meeting.
Gov. Ed Rendell appeared before the committee to insist that the General Assembly pass legislation to institute additional restrictions on a law-abiding citizen's right to purchase a weapon. Specifically, Rendell championed the ideas of limiting gun sales to one per month and allowing each municipality throughout Pennsylvania to enact its own gun laws.
I am pleased to report that both of those bills were defeated in the House Judiciary Committee.
I believe that today's vote upholds the belief that punishing law-abiding gun owners will not keep guns out of the hands of criminals. Moreover, if we focus on taking the comprehensive approach of truly enforcing the gun laws in place, along with adequately providing for our law enforcement officials, we can take effective steps in dealing with gun violence in Pennsylvania's rural, suburban, and urban areas.
