The Eighth Air Force ("The Mighty Eighth") was a part of the United States ARMY Air Forces.
The prestige they won, was won with ARMY blood.

On the money Doug. The vast majority of our wings can trace their lineage back to their Army days.
My wing (7th Bomb Wing) can trace its roots back to when they were a baloon observation unit in the Army during WW I.
Some of our AF leaders have forgotten where we came from...some of us remember and hold our bond with our Army brethern very closely.0 -
The 5th bomb wing here in Minot started out at Luke Field in 1919 flying Airco(de Havilland) DH.4 bomber.

Can't back this up with a stat reference at my fingertips...
WWII AAF aircrew combat casualties totalled more than infantry combat casualties. (By a few percentage points, if memory serves me correctly). Joe0 -
