Got a PA buck today.....sort of

After all morning jumping groups of does I decided that there was enough deer in this area to shoot a muley to make sausage out of. I shot one and when I got to it was surprised to find out it was not a muley, but actually an almost antlerless buck. It was definetly not a button buck because it was way way too big. It was a very old gray buck that had one antler about 1.5 inches long on one side and whatever he had on the other side had broken off. The teeth were all very worn and the molars had a lot of rot in them. For whatever reason this buck had no rack. I think it was winged in a previous year because I found a bullet wedged against one of the rear ribs with a bunch of scar tissue and no entry or exit hole near it. My dad got a great look at a nice 6 point.... but no matter how hard he looked he could not find that 7th point. We will both be back out tomorrow chasing racks. We limit ourself to only one muley a year between the two of us no matter how many deer we see.

    I would sure make sausage & hamburger out of that one.maybe evan tough jerky.

    Most of it is being ground up into sausage and burger.... only thing I am keeping out is the chops.

    I'm from the western part of the state, and had no idea there were mule deer in PA.

    Granted, I haven't hunted there since I was a kid and the only thing you could hunt on Sundays was crows. (no kidding)

    Muley in Pa means a doe,also called mammas and flat heads.No matter what you call 'em they still taste better than any buck.I got a 7pt last Tue. and got a doe this evening. I've been hunting hard since season came in. Here around my house,I haven't seen much, but I have a garage customer that has a honey hole.Can't wait til morning to see if my daughter has any luck.

    Born and raised in Western Pa myself and there ARE no mule deer there.

    Sorry for the confusion.... up in NW PA where my family is from whitetail does are generally referred to as Muleys.... in fact if you call them does the locals know your from out of town and will not let you hunt on their properties. I guess this must just be a NW PA nickname....

    I'm from Mercer, PA and we never ever ever called them "muleys"...called them "does" or "antlerless" or dinner.
