I could spend a year in the south and not pick up a southern accent, but give me 4 hours with people from North Dakota, Minnesota or Canada and my speech gets corrupted.


I don't know. Maybe it's my Norwegian heritage, but it is an easy habit to drag out those O's and U's.

    Us of Polish decent talk like that too. You get "corrupted" because it's the proper way to speak the language.

    So I'm staying at this Ronald McDonald House for 11 days. There is a guy there from North Dakota and his retired father. The guy just got a lung transplant and is hanging out nearby the hospital for a few weeks.

    After a day I notice I'm picking up the freaking Northern accent...in Chicago of all places.

    I haven't lived in MN for 16 years, but it takes me about 10 minutes to pick up the accent again. Then it takes me about 2 weeks to get rid of once I come home.
    The funny thing is that I grew up thinking that I didn't have an accent at all.[8D]

    ...I pick it up immediately. It's a curse. After ski trips to the U.P., I'd talk like a yooper for a week. In the Carib, I picked up that strange Spanish, English, French, patois.

    ...While somewhere in the south (Alabama?), I witnessed an accident. I went to a gas station and actually told them to call the po-leeze. My wife rolls her eyes and says "You're doing it again."
