A Dog question.........
Daisy hates her baths, I try to give her one every couple weeks (she is a inside dog) with a grooming shampoo (looks and smells like baby shampoo?) she hates it! she hold on to my arm with her claws so hard she has drawn blood! anybody got any suggestions on how to get her to like it? (or at least tolerate it?) Or should I just bring home a pair of welders sleeves?

It took 2-1/2 years for my RAT TERROR to "put-up" with bath-time.
Eventually,,,,,,,, she'll get used to it.
PS. SLEEVES might come in handy, in the interim...[^]0 -

she needs to do it on her own terms.
no welder gloves, start small, like baths in shallow water, let her find her own way.
let her stand in a tray of water and wash her feet little by little she will swim.
she doesn't know it yet, you just have to trick em into it.
if she is not naturally drawn to water you cant push, you need to get her to like it on her own.
It can be done, I did it with my first lab. waterdog who was affraid of water. [8D]0 -

Make it a good thing. Give her a treat before, then in the bathroom then in the bathtub etc, etc.......................... 0 -
Find a shampoo that smells like cowsh***t. Then she will jump right in![}:)][}:)] Thats what my puppies love.[:(] Roll in the cowsh**t and eat the elksh**t every time we go out in the woods. 0 -
Teach her a good solid "sit" command. Also try putting a rubber mat in the tub or even a towel. Very few dogs feel comfortable on the slippery surface of a tub. I taught my GSP, who HATES bathes to sit on a 2x3 section of stall mat (very heavy rubber). Then moved the mat to the tub. She still doesn't like it but I come out in much better shape. 0 -
We found some "bath towel" things at Wally World. Kinda like a big baby wipe. They work great with the daughters pup for those "in between" baths. She loves being rubbed down with one of them. 0 -

Molly, my almost 4 mo old lab pup loves her baths. I have given up on keeping a water dish for her and gone straight to a tub because she would try to get in the water dish and paddle. Anyway, like the others have suggested, I started slowly and worked up from the feet when she was smaller getting her wet from the bottom up. Water temp is important. Not to cold as to shock her or startle her. Of course, now, Molly could bathe in ice water and enjoy it. Anyway, you might experiment in differnt shampoos also, it might be the smell that is turning Daisy off..........[:)][:)] 0 -

I'd go with the rubber mat trick, my male pointer didn't like the
slick bath tub floor.
But before she gets a bath, take her for a LONG walk, like a good
hour hike, she'll be tired out, most likely won't put up too much fuss!0 -
I put on my bathing suit and we put our dogs (one at a time) into the shower. We have the shower head attached to the hose, so it allows us to bathe the dogs without a tub or direct spray in their faces. They don't love it, but they don't fight us either. 0 -

When I used to show dogs in AKC we would do what's called baiting the dog. Teaching them to stand while baiting is very easy. The transition to standing in the tub is easy. I could tell my Brittany named "Sky" to stand pretty much anytime and he would lock up and stand like he was in a show.
Just for all the doubters he also was extremely birdy from day one and worked later on after some teaching. I miss him greatly, he was my best friend growing up. [:(]0 -

I'll second the "sit/stay" command.
I've never had one actually come to like baths. Have had a couple that would hide if they even thought you were thinking about it! One of them was an outdoor dog that would go up on the hill and sit and ignore you! Had to ambush that one by acting like I was sneaking a shotgun out to the truck! [:D] They are aware of everything and I do mean EVERYTHING that you say or you do.
Be careful not to over bathe. May cause skin drying. Some Beagles have a tendency to have skin problems and ear infections caused by water and some shampoos and soaps aggravate this. Not all of them have problems but an increasing group of inside dogs seem to. So called "hot spots" and itchy spots where the dog licks and nibbles at it until they've got a good size sore going.
Besides she's a Beagle! They are gonna stink! It's one of the breed characteristics. [8D]
Another one is that they think they are starving to death.

That is funny. But so true. In my experience Beagles naturally hate baths and love to roll in poop or anything else that smells awful. Mine would die until he could get to something stinky to roll in after a bath. Course he lived outdoors anyhow.0 -

Every time you bath her, make it a fun time...a treat time etc...
and using a mat on the bottom will help too...
Cats hate sliding in the tub, and a mat calms them immediately, they dig their claws in and steadies them....

all of my dogs hated getting a bath, but after getting dried off with a towel they really liked being clean. especially when they get to run around outside in the fresh air like that. as for the bath part, just have to slowly get them used to it.
however you start them off, don't wash anywhere near their head b/c they really don't like that. when they get used to a bath later on, you can start washing their neck, then their head (which seems to be the dirtiest part, probably from petting). for that, try just using a soaking wet washcloth to get it wet, then soap it up with your fingers, and the washcloth again to rinse, to keep the water to a minimum. keep it away from their eyes. don't pour water over their head.
if your dog doesn't like being clean after a bath, it's going to be hard to get them to like a bath because they don't see any point in it.0 -

My wife and I are professional dog groomers, and every one of you have hit the nail on the head...hard. We use the same training techniques in our shop (sit, treats, good boy, fun fun, etc). I've found that most generally beagles are least tolerant in the tub, but don't quit, keep on and she'll tolerate it soon.

Do you have sliding doors on the tube? It helps a lot. A rubber mat is a good idea also.
Put her into the tub, without any water, and give her a treat, her favorate toy and enjoy some play time with her (in the tub) IOW teach her that the tub itself is nothing to be afraid of. After she is used to being in the tub, take a shower with her in there also (but don't bath her, yet). She'll learn that getting wet with "dad" is no big deal. From there it just gets easier.
Our last beagle hated a bath, but didn't mind getting in the tub as that was the only place we would give him his favorate toy/snack AKA the mice that we live trapped (he would remove the ones caught in the snap traps himself, often before we saw them).0 -
My dog don't need no stinken' baths. She goes and swims in one in one of the ponds every now and then !! [:D][:D][:D] 0
