Nitrogen in your tires?
I passed a tire shop today and read a sign.It said "Ask me about Nitrogen for your tires",So I did.The lady tells me that I will get better gas milage and tire life becuz Nitrogen is thicker (her words,not mine)Than air.I think she ment denser.Also,It is dryer than compressed air,So it wouldnt dry rot my tires.WOW!All this time you were putting wet,Thin air in your tires.Now you know.[:p]

The wet thing is definitely true.
I use compressed nitrogen to coat guns whenever the relative humidity is over 45% in the shop.
With an evap. cooler running and especially during "monsoon season" the moist air just plays hell with the coating as even with filters, drops and dryers, compressing air wrings the humidity out of it. It just does. I've spend thousands trying to eliminate it, but switching to the gas cylinders is the only proven method.
UH60 Blackhawk and AH64 Apache tires are filled with compressed nitrogen. I'm not sure why, but I'm sure with the vast knowledge base we have here, someone will chime in shortly to tell us.

Did she mention that with it being a more dense gas it's less likily to leak out. So your tires will hold pressure better. 0 -

I have nitrogen in my sedan's tires, have had so for almost two years.
You get a smoother ride and the tires never seem to lose air pressure.
However, they ride a bit funky in very cold temperatures. I'm not entirely sure it was worth the investment, and many tire shops do not have nitrogen if you need to add some air to the tires.0 -

i remember as kid that Standard oil advertised to change the air in your tires to Pink Air....kids used to hound station for the valve caps for their bikes which were red crowns.. we had Vickers station across road ...no pink air...no fancy valve caps....nitrogen= horse apples 0 -

Lots of Pro Truckers use it, Car rental agencies use it, Taxi companies use it, race teams often use it. With NO moisture inside the tires, they don't gain so much pressure when they are loaded, as there is no vapor pressure added to the fill pressure. Since the pressure stays more stable, the tires have more reserve load capacity if they are at proper pressure when hot, and they are not so low when it is cold if you have the pressure adjusted to be correct when hot.
Oxygen aids the aging of the lining within the tire - nitrogen does not because it is inert. Nitrogen filled tires run cooler, and that translates into better tread life, and more resistance to impact damage (albeit only a few percent).
Rental agencies would not do anything unless it paid them. Penske Trucks have nitrogen fill. UPS same. Same for race teams. Even our local Costco uses Nitrogen to fill customer tires.
I buy into it, and will pay a premium for it.0 -

I've heard that most all commercial airlines fill their airplane tires with Pure Nitrogen for a variety of the reasons just mentioned, but MOST Importantly is the elimination of Oxygen (in air) in close proximity to White Hot Brake linings/pads. The moisture thing is over rated. I saw a documentary where divers took tires off a sunken ship (WW2 cargo) and they were as good as brand new.
As previously stated AIR is 78% nitrogen anyway. And when you compress air 60% of the moisture in air comes out (total humidity varies day to day) and removed in the compressor.
If you use compressed air that was compressed to over 2000 psi (like scuba air) moisture content is around 2 to 4 %.0 -
Moisture in and of itself is not the problem - it is the variability of the pressure between cold and hot, if there is water in the tire...it vaporizes and adds to the pressure under load.
Nitrogen has 0.00% moisture in it as supplied, and therefore the pressure remains (percenatge wise) more stable. When water condenses within the tire, you get unbalance, and when the tire gets hot enough, the water changes state and adds to the tire pressure more than pure Nitrogen would.0 -

You live in a monsoon area and use evaporative cooling? OK, I guess it gets dry and hot between monsoons, but changing to refrigerated air would be the first thing I would have done to eleminate a moisture problem in stored guns. Evaporative air conditioners don't work in high humidity.0 -

Every jet I've ever worked on has nitrogen in the tires. No moisture and more stable. The tires on an F-16 get serviced to 300psi. Learjet main tires are kept at 160psi. 0 -

I don't believe he means that he's using a swamp cooler to cool his shop. Seems that he's putting on a sprayed chemical application, like a Duracoat, using compressed air.0 -
I do use a swamp cooler to cool the shop.
It's Mesa AZ. HOT and it don't get much drier.
Except 5 weeks or so every summer. Or like today where we have remnants of the hurricane moving up from the southeast.
The relative humidity in the shop is 74% right now. Up in the offices it's 45%. But I have an A/C up here.
I'm running compressed nitrogen to coat parts today and even so, it's still tough going to get the right sheen. Plus I'm sweating like Jesse Jackson at a Paternity hearing which doesn't help much.
I've got permission from the landlord to install A/C units on the roof. 2-5 ton units will cost me over 10K installed. OUCH.
The landlord has agreed to give me half of that back in lease payment credits over the next 5 years. It helps, but not right now.
