The sound of gunfire

Gunfire is definetly an unmistakable sound IF the gun is fired outdoors, and your outdoors. With all of the walls in the building the sound had to travel through, I can see how it could be confused with other noises. If he would have had a silencer, it might still be going on.

Walls tend to muffle and distort the sound.....

What do you expect of kids not ever allowed to play Cowboys and Native

I heard interviews with two student who were inside the classrooms that got shot up. They both said that they initially thought the shots were construction sounds. Then they realized that it was gunshots.
Nobody got up and did anything.
What a bunch of passive kids.

It's just human nature to asume the most likely explanation for things we hear. A loug bang (distorted by walls) in a university setting would most likely be caused by some sort of construction or repair work. So our brain recognizes it as such. We are not expecting gunfire in such a situation so gunfire is not our first thought.

I can tell you this - ALL of my kids recognize the sound of gunfire, inside or outside - and ALL of my kids go toward it.

...I may be wrong, but I think the point is that "apparantly" none of these kids were ever around firearms/shooting much.

...Regardless of where these kid's were, mall, street, wherever; if they had been aware of what gunshot's sounded like it would/should not have taken their brains long to have recognized the sounds for what they were, maybe some did?...[;)]

There is construction immediately behind Norris Hall on the VT campus. This combined with the sound distortion of a gun fired indoors might have made anyone (combat or LEO veterans excepted) disregard gunfire as construction noise.

Yep, 2 X 4's being stacked up sounds like gun fire.
