Need help!!! Truck decision
I need to decided if I want to buy a 86 Chevy and a 92 Dodge. The Chevy is a K10 standard cab long bed it has a 6 inch lift on 35 Super Swampers. It has a 355 with a turbo 350, 204 tranfer case,(all of which has been rebuilt) it also has a Corporate 14 bolt rear 3/4 ton rear, Dana 60 3/4 front. body is great very little rust, basiclly just needs sanded and paint, which my dad and I can do. Is this truck worth 4 Grand?
The other truck is a 92 Dodge standard cab short bed with 4 inch lift on 33 AT tires. It is basiclly stock with a 318. The body is great and has no rust anywhere. It needs a water pump, again I can do this and is not expensive. Is this truck worth 3K?
I need help quick. I've been pondering on these buys for a day and can't decide. These trucks will be for resale. I may keep the Chevy for awhile. Like I said I have to be able to sell them for 4K for the Chevy and 3K for the Dodge in order to make a profit.

traci,the 86 has a factory 208 transfer,and if the ft end is 3/4 its a corp 10 or dana 44 if its a dana 60 its a 1 ton unit, the chevy depending on the interior cond. should be worth every penny of 4k,any paper work on the engine come with it ie receipts work done etc,might help you sell it/ is it a silverado ie a/c pw pdr locks tilt cruise etc, or custom deluxe, roll ups no power acc, that could affect your end price you receive also, any pics? the dodge should be worth 3k just depends on the same ie condition overall interior, have both been mud trucks or more street? pics could help your question. good luck, LOKO [:D] 0 -

These are the parts he's mention. It's not stock. It also has a dual plane Ederblock intake carb and carb. The interior is okay it needs a front seat the old one is torn. It's the most rust free 86 I've ever seen. The trim is all there and in good shape. I could paint this with very little body work and do some interior stuff and this would be a perfect truck. Still think it's worth it? I really think it's a cool truck too.0 -

traci,have you seen it in person? look carefully at the cab corners bad spot on these gm trucks, is it a solid color or two tone? extra parts are everywhere for these yrs 81-87 trks and 81-91 blazers and suburbans were the same from the ft doors forward if you needed body parts, have you driven the chevy? is it fairly tight on the road whats the condition of the tires and wheels? could you get a pic of it? this is the one i restored, now i say yea its worth it you have to decide though how much you want to spend on it.

I've seen it and drove it. It does wonder somewhat, but everything seem tight on the front. It has very little rust. Everything on the body is useable. The worst rust in on the top of the cab and it's still soild. I'm more worried about what works and doesn't work in the interior. The body and frame is soild.0 -

BTW Loko. I really love that truck. Are those really bead lock? I was thinking they weren't street legal. The truck I mention here is the same style but a Chevy.

the swampers are probably most of the wandering, the top of the cab will have to be stripped and sealed good to get the new paint to stay put, can you go back and check out the trk again, ie turn the signals on, the heater, radio? lights, just look it over good the seat can be recovered by you for around 200.00 bucks finding a seat in good condition is like winning the lottery slim to none [:D] but you didnt say if it had a/c tilt etc plain janes will be harder to sell IMHO if it is power acc check them out to make sure they work run the windows up and down lock and unlock the doors turn the a/c on etc were the tires in in good condition tread wise, 35" or bigger are going to cost you if you need to replace them and swampers whether SSRs or TSLs are going to shake and not balance, i have 38" tsl non radials on my suburban and they are like square blocks till you get some heat built up in them the ones on my trk actually ride super 39.5" IROK radials,paint and supplies aren't cheap any more either. the paint for my trk was 700.00 at the body shops cost, red is the most exp. color though, what color is it? 0 -

I don't remember if is has tilt. He say everything, but the ac works. The compressor missing, but he has one. I've got my trailer hook up and going to pick it up right now. I'm biased toward the Dodge. Always have been. Anyone that's looked under a Ford, Chevy, or Dodge will soon find that they share many components in common. Chevy motors are good, but so is the Dodge 318. Transfer case on either is made by MoPar. The rest of the drivetrain... They've both been in the business for a very long time. Sheet metal? Your choice.
What's not to like about the Chevy? For me - Chevy. I'm a contrarian and it just torques me when someone says... "You can't go wrong with a Chevy". Of course you can! You can go wrong with anything that man makes.
From a purely objective standpoint, if the Dodge is what we refer to as a Gen 1 (Old Body Style, and I think this one is.), then it's somewhat crude by comparison to the Chevy. What I'm saying is that Dodge built a truck, then worried about creature comforts. Chevy did the opposite.
The Chevy will probably appeal to folks who want a light duty truck, but prefer a car-like vehicle. The Dodge will have less curb appeal unless you do something spectacular, but will accept more overall abuse. Dodge folks tend to prefer a truck and use it as one. Nothing wrong with either approach.
By the way - I'm not knocking GM. I'm merely explaining why there might be a market for both vehicles.0 -

simulated locks traci, your correct real bead locks aren't dot legal, or safe to run on the road, whats my trk worth ha ha i have a small fortune in it, its new ft to back 600 miles on everything but the frame and body which came from south carolina/rust free and it came from the original owner who bought it in 85,alot of time and sweat in the process let alone money. lol and you really never get out of something like this what you have in it,this is a before pic, w/the 78 body and 38" tsl swampers ,diff.winch and $6.00 ft bumper i made for it,olive drab is still my favorite color lol [:D] it saw plenty of woods and trail adventures from ohio to tellico mnt, tenn and back [^]

Second Generation Dodge to present, I'd argue about which is a better all around vehicle. Probably GM if you want a car that you can use as a truck and a Dodge if you want a truck that can be used as a car.
The newer 4.7 has turned out to be excellent, but that's beside the point. I'd steer clear of a 360 because of its thirst. Otherwise a good engine. And the old reliable 318? Not especially good at any one thing, but very good overall.
GM? The 350 would be my choice hands down.

I can't remember, but I think Gen 2 1500's appeared in '92 or '93. If so, then you have a nice body style and a very good truck overall. Much higher quality body-wise than the old Gen 1's. With a nice new finish and a good 318 the Gen 2 won't stay in your yard for long.0 -

New Process was totally MoPar at that time. Then New Venture in partnership with GM at least as far as transmissions. Now independent as I understand it, or at least purchased by a third party.
Whether Chrysler still makes the transfer cases, I don't know. I somewhat expect they do, but I wouldn't be willing to make a bet on it.0 -
alot of people gave the 203 cast iron case part time/ grief but it was a strong t/c if you kept the chain adjusted same with the 208 alum case, it has the lowest low range of the three 203.205,208 the 205 gear driven was the bear, i have a 203/205 off road doubler kit in my trk, with two sticks for a variety of options, 2x2 low range,ft wheel dr only two low ranges original 203 low range or 4:1,you use the low range box from the 203 and w/adapter mate it to the 205, will handle all the tq. you throw at it,probably good to at least 650ft lbs [:p] b. block tq.[:D] you and Doug are right about the 318 mopars best small blk for dependability and longevity,and they did share the dana 44 ft axle,and trans/cases,along w/the 435 granny 4sp. tuff old trks both of them [:D] 0 -
