    I've got an older version of what is now the 12vbss. It's a honey. Ya can't go wrong with Savage.

    It looks to me that the 300 Win is only available in one of the configurations.

    I guess it depends on how much you want to spend on ammo and what applications you have in mind for the weapon.

    Thats a nice looking rifle and good value for the money, its not a Reminton,Ruger but it will be a good rifle. i assume you'll only hunt with it, should last a long time. 308 is a good one too, cant reach out and touch things with it like you can with a 300 win. I have a Ruger 300 win. Love it only use it for ELK,BEAR hunting. Alaskan Outfitter i know wont let anyone go bear hunting with him, with anything smaller that a 300 win. He suggested 338 win or bigger but would let them if they had at least 300win

    defiantly like that you are thinking stainless, much more durable in the elements. heavy barrel isn't the best for packing while hunting, great at the range and for increased accuracy. Laminate Stocks are just Cool.

    I will be using both rifles for long range benchrest shooting as well as hunting mainly deer and feral hogs. I want one of each mostly to diversify my collection and give me more options if I ever get an opportunity for competition.

    Odawgp, I fell in love with a savage at Dick's sporting goods that had a thumbhole stock just like that one, but I could not find an example on the Savage website, I wish I had a model number. Wonder if it's avalable with a heavy varmint barrel[?]

    I have seen that one also. you could also look into what is costs with cheapo synth. stock. and see how much a laminate like that would cost from either Richards Micro Lam Stock in CA, or Elkridge stocks. both can be found on the internet with tons of color options. i'll post the links in a bit.

    mine came from Ruger with the Synth. for 250 more i put a custom thumb hole on. i am a gorilla and have a 15"+ length of pull.

    When I was younger a buddy of mine went out and bought his first high power rifle. I already had a .308 and a 30-06 but he wanted more power so he bought a 300 win mag. I asked him why a .300 mag and he said he might need it for moose or brown bear, but we lived in CA, there are no moose or browm bear in CA. A few months later he confessed to me that he wished he didn't buy it. It's not that there was anything wrong with the cartage or the gun, he said it was because ammo was so expensive and he really couldn't use the gun to it's capability. He later sold it and bought a nice .308 that he could afford to feed and shoot all day long.
    The moral of this story is that if you don't have a .308, go buy one. If you have a .308 and you reload, go get the .300 mag.

    I'll agree with Colonel Plink, you might find a rifle that is prettier than a savage, but you won't find one that shoots better.

    I did a little looking and can't find one on the savage website, I have seen the bull barreled savages with thumb hole. not for a while but they existed.

    doesn't look like you can save enough to buy it and strip the stock and replace with a custom laminate. WoW they want alot of money for those fine piece's of gun. Are the GB price's that high? it been a few yrs since i look at buying a Savage. in 22-250 then it was less than 500 for stainless. and i've heard they have only gotten even better since.

    Thanks for the links. I am going down to look at that rifle again this weekend and this time I will write down the model number. I am going to hunt for a Chaote stock for my Winchester at the gun show this weekend. Wish me luck!
