This was a very fluid series of events. If the shot guy was reaching into his pocket and pulling something out, and the officer reacted to that, it was a very fast reaction. The officer saw a threat, drew and fired. The shot hit the shot guy, which was what it was meant to do. That it hit the elbow was totally accidental. No way the officer meant to do that.

In a high stress situation, we often will focus our eyes on the threat. Then when we shoot, we shoot at the threat. This is why bad guys sometimes get the guns shot out of their hands, or get struck in the hand or forearm. It isn't because the officer meant to. It's because he was focused on the weapon and that's where the shot went.

Officer had already ordered him to show his hands several times. I imagine the Officers gun would already be drawn at this point. If you reach in you pocket to pull something out,, the elbow is almost perfect level with a center shot. I think the cell phone guy got extremely lucky the Officer didn't hit him dead center.

Sheriff Lott seems to be defending his department as if they commited a crime. It's too bad today when the police shoot a suspect they have to do so much to defend themselves from the media and public. Especially in a case like this where a black man is shot. Any bets Rev Al or Jesse Jackass won't scream police brutallity in this case?

Sheriff Lott in Richland Co. is a great Sheriff. There is a lot of crime that goes on in Richland Co. Gang related killings are getting the upper hand over there. I will not let my wife shop by herself at any mall in that County. She does teach in that county but a resource Officer is in the building at all times in her elementary school.

It was obviously a lucky shot, not for the ofcr but for the bad guy.
He is very lucky it just got his elbow.

Good rule to follow..... The only thing you should be reaching for when the cops are pointing their guns at you is.... the sky.

It's really very simple. If you don't want to get shot just do as the police say. Otherwise call ahead and reserve a room at the hospital.

Center mass is what the officer is trained to hit.

    Bad cop, no doughnut.
