I used an old, unwashed, flannel shirt that I had worn around the house, a hot water bottle and an alarm clock.

Every night in the kennel, be consistant

Smells like his master, warm and the ticking of a heart beat.

For me 6 months old is way to old for a puppy not to be kennel broke. When I used to train bird dogs I broke them of it with a squirt bottle and plenty of "kennel up!" commands during the day.

if it is a wire kennel or any kind with an open view of the surronding area use a old blanket to cover. Make it like a cave for him/her. it makes it like a home to them and also makes them feel more secure. good luck. just got a 9 week old pup about 3 weeks ago, 3 nights of no sleep and all good. we also put a piece of clothing in there for scent

We had a similar problem with Sam, although he was not 6 months old (sounds a little old, but any dog can be trained).

Consistency is key. You have to ignore the dog. No matter what the dog is doing, you have to ignore it. Don't yell at it, don't comfort it, don't change things up. Your dog is looking for attention -- ANY attention (good or bad). You have to show that this behavior will merely be ignored.

You will lose a few nights sleep. However, in the meantime, when the dog is not in its kennel, go in and try and make it as pleasing for the dog as possible. Don't have the dog on the cold, plastic (or metal) floor. We went ahead and put Wal-mart towels on the bottom. Sam chewed them to pieces, but at $1.50 each, we really didn't care.

After a few nights of the same routine with your not coming to "rescue" him, your dog should be fine and sleep through the night.
