How often do you go out to eat?
The tipping thread made me think about how seldom we go out compared to some people I know. Having three kids and living WAY out of town makes it nearly impossible to go out to eat. In the past ten years or so.....I would say we have gone out to eat no more than three times each year.
During the Christmas season is really the only time we find ourselves "going out" to eat.....and that is only because we pretty much HAVE to. I can't see the expense being worth the meal. It is always over $30 to $50 (and sometimes even more.) What all can you do for $30 a month.....gym membership....hunting club....cellphone...glass bead making classes...feed ten children in pakistan (or wherever they are in those pictures)....have fake nails....sit in the vibrating chair at the mall for three hours.....its just not worth it to me to go out.
Another thing...some people go out when things are not in line for these luxuries. If you live on a week to week basis....WHY ON EARTH is it justified to spend money on these types of things? If you have extra cash it doesn't mean "you've finally made it....go reward yourself." Car running OK, savings in line to take care of anything that may happen, clothes, house, heath care, pets all of that where it needs to be?
I can have $3,000.00 on me and still....I don't want to pay $30 for my meal.

Speaking only of dinner - 2. My wife doesn't cook. I mean really doesn't. She works eves and is off two day a week which is on a 14 day schedule. She buys dinner on her 2 days off.
I am a great cook - lived alone and didn't get married until I was 30. What was I thinking?! I make and usually freeze stews and soups because with just me I can't eat it all at once. I have a big garden and make 20-30 pints of salsa each fall. I just always have loved to cook.0 -
Maybe 1-2 times a week. Not too bad for a college kid I don't think. [:D] If I do, it's to Taco Johns, so it's pretty cheap. Helps that I know one of the employees.[;)][;)] 0 -
Almost every night.

Once a week ans on real special occasion, twice. Don 0 -
does room service count as "out to eat"?
if so, all the time[;)]0 -
I usually cook for myself. Nothing fancy (well, occasionally I'll roll some of my own sushi rolls), but its enough to get by. By eating out, you spend way more money than you would have just buying stuff for yourself. It adds up, especially if you make it a habit.
The times I do eat out, I try to keep it under $10.0 -
Summertime = once a week.
Wintertime = once or twice a month.0 -
Every night. I'm not allowed to eat in the house [:(] 0 -
Way too much, at LEAST 5 days a week, not just 5 meals, 5 days. Some of it has to do with my job and some to do with being lazy. I am not in one place long enough to make food most of the time. I work 48-72 hrs a week stratight so that is 6-9 meals a week. I usually get breakfast on the way to work or from work since it is a 3-4 hr drive one way. If I am go to my house I will eat at home, a good reason to live in the middle of nowhere. If I go to my Girlfriends house she lives in the city and by the time she get off work we will go out to eat. We are buying a house right now so I hope that will help, plus I wont have as much spending money. In the new house I wont be bouncing between her house and mine (about 1hr apart) plus work. That should mean a more normal schedule to work from. 0 -
We eat out about once a week on average. Used to do so more often, but we are eating healthy and that makes it difficult to eat out at as many places. 0 -
Spider....we all saw that desk of yours....I don't know if I could let you eat in my house either.
By saying "going out" really don't mean fast food. I still don't eat that very often either....but what I mean is something along the lines of Chili's or Outback Steak House (or better.)
In one nice place (where some faux Japanese "chef" did some sub-par floor show while cooking our food) I remember paying almost $300 for 6 people to eat. This was mind numbing at the time!!!! All I could think was...."I just spent a decent side by side shotgun...or a used Springfield...or SIX Hi Points...or two good 38 specials!!" Its just not in my genes to spend on one meal what could be so much more.
The most dag-nab aggrivating time of all for me is when you are done....and just can't leave until the check comes. They just let you sit there....almost daring you to walk out.0 -

Make my lunch every morning and I cook every night,we go out for dinner 2-3 times a month.Wife says she wants a maid.I told her thats fine but she has to pay me double what she pays her 0 -
Being single it sucks to cook for just 1. As a Firefighter I work 24 hours on 48 off. I cook at the station for breakfast and lunch that is just for me and we take turns, 4 of us, cooking dinner for everyone.
When I off I cook, heat up some type of frozen food, at home 2-3 time a week.
If I had a girlfriend I would be cooking at home a lot. I enjoy cooking, if it's for more than just me.
Any single good looking girls wanting dinner just call me. [;)] [^]0 -
OOOOOO!!!!!!! I eat out every day, we have a group of guys and sometimes we let women come if they don't talk. But we eat out every day and never-ever at the same place. We try to solve the problems of the world when we go out to eat, so we pick a place 1 to 2 hrs before time so to keep it a secret. 0 -
+1, Smokeater.
I work 12 on, 12 off, 4+ days per week (depending on "overtime"--not always voluntary).
I'm single, and cooking for one stinks. I tend to cook more in the summer; it's easy to fire up the grill and throw a chop on, but...in the winter, it's easier to pick up takeaway chinese, a pizza, Subway...than take the time to cook.
I probably eat out 5-6 times a week...not counting eating out of vending machines at work...0 -
Eating out at a nice restaurant makes us feel good about ourselves.
The value is in ambience and a well prepared and served meal.
It can't be justified by comparing it with the cost of eating in, though time savings in avoiding the food shopping, preparation and cleanup can be meaningful.
We eat out about once a week and try to avoid fast food joints.
For the most part, restaurant meal servings are about twice the size of our home cooked meals so we take doggy bags home for the following night. It doesn't embarass us.
My wife's cooking has improved from zero to a ten during our marriage
so a meal out is rarely entirely better.0 -
Since it is basketball season for my son, we are doing it more than normal. For b-days or anniversaries we go to Red Lobster. If we do have to go out I like to go somewhere nice. no Mickey dees. I figure with a 12year old that is 5'9" and 160lb I can save money and have a better meal at a resturaunt than at a fast food place. We have meals at home whenever there is no practice or games and we eat it at the dining room table. To me that is very important. 0 -
We are real tight A$$. Mayby 3-4 times a year[:0] 0
