Are the travel sites like kirkline priceline, or travelocity [Mr. Gnome] really a money saver?
Are they even worth it? Even if you can name your own price?

I've bought many tickets through priceline, Hotwire and expedia, saved me lots. You have to shop, but yes you can save money most of the time. 0 -
I made our hotel reservation through one of those sites and it saved me a goodly sum for a 4 day stay. I checked by visiting the sites of the hotels I was interested in and even calling a couple of their reservation numbers.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
I spend a lot of time shopping for airfare. I use probably 30 different websites to do my research. Some might balk at that, but I've found fares differ from website to website by some significant dollars.
Hotwire and Priceline are great if you are traveling at the last minute. For booking far in advance, these websites are less desirable. Hotwire will even tell you that.
The second problem with Hotwire and Priceline is that you don't get to know what your flight/schedule is until you buy the ticket. Both have options to choose your own flights and schedules, but you lose some of the really good discounts that way. However, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what the various schedules are unless you are traveling from one really major hub to another.
Here's my recommendation for you:
1. Find the flight that you want on the portal website.
2. Go to that airline's website and see if they'll offer you a better rate. These days, the airlines "guarantee" they'll have the lowest price available.
3. I've found that the airlines will list flights that the portals won't, because the portals have already sold out their allotment of tickets.
Really, finding the "right" airfare is more of a game than a science. If you want the names of some of the consistently less-expensive websites, let me know.
Oh yeah, also, some airlines, such as Southwest, don't appear on 99% of the portals at all, and you may be missing out on a very good deal just because you didn't hit the right website.0
