I do seem to recall a great many people either supporting such a stance or falling oddly silent when that very excuse was used to justify warrantless wiretaps, warrantless searches, and illegal detentions.

It's also used to justify the anti-choice agenda.

Yes, I do hate that line of reasoning... especially when people don't give a damn about it unless it affects their ability to have guns.

"Take away the right of individual citizens to keep and bear arms, and watch how quickly the other nine Amendments become outdated."

True, but that right and the exercise thereof assumes there is something to fight for.

And when we barter and trade all of the other nine away in the vain hopes that our masters will let us keep the Second, we will find, before too long, that people will not even be willing to fight for that.

Surrender becomes easy when it becomes a habit.

And, if there's not, well, hopefully I'll be dead by then and won't have to deal with it. So long as there's something to fight for, however, I'm willing to.

There are all kinds of "statistics" compiled on gun related violent crime. The more important statistic would be to know the amount of violent crime that was PREVENTED by the simple thought in a criminels mind that the victim(s) just may be armed. There's no way to accurately chart this, though I feel it would show some remarkable figures. Before we had CCW in Missouri the carjackings alone in Saint Louis averaged three to four a day! Since CCW, which has been @ two years, there has not been a dozen total. This, of course, is conveniently ignored by the anti gun crowd. Geniouses? More like [8]s.

Agreed but that's sort of hijacking this thread.

The Vulcans got it right when they said the needs of the many outweigh the needs for the few. Just because one person might benefit from some liberal knee-jerk doesn't mean it's good for the entire nation.

Actually that's basic Utilitarian ethical theory. [:)]

"If it only saves one innocent childs life, isn't it all worth it?"

The above quote is among the favorites of the anti gun forces. The essay by Mr. Schwartz that you posted indicates that he knows this and the gist of his article explains why he thinks that is a hollow philosophy. I happen to agree. My post reinforces the thoughts of Mr. Schwartz and attempts to magnify, in a small way, the irrational thought line of the anti gun movement thus making me innocent of the charged highjacking.[;)]

    Dak To,

Spaniel's been a little peevish as of late and doesn't like it when others add their two cents. He's trying very hard to be THE conservative blogger here and doesn't like the competition...

The logic of your post, namely that more lives are saved by guns than ended, was lost in a haze of insecurity...

Can't see logic through green eyes, ya know![;)][:D]

Yes. Many, many times. But the folks who repeatedly say it really don't mean it. Absolutely no one wants to compartmentalize a human life - even in the greater context of a larger society - for fear that it may make them appear as calloused, inhuman, indifferent, uncaring, hardhearted, etc. I believe it's still called "seeking the approval of one's peers".

    Spaniel,

Couldn't help but see a very disturbing trend in your posts of late.

Let's take a look at two examples:

Dak adds his two cents, and while you agree, you claim he is "hijacking" this thread.

Now on to example number 2.

An absolute ban on guns may indeed save one child's life, but it would cost many more lives than it could possibly save. This is exactly the same as sending your entire paycheck to Nigerian internet scammers every month with the mindset that, if even one of them is for real, it was worth it.

    FUNNY How the Bible States

First Timothy :6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Doesn't say Swords, Bows, or Guns BUT MONEY

Sometimes, my posts are long-winded, sometimes my posts are short and to the point.

I don't believe it to be a "trend" in any sense of the term.

Hmmm... that's a good point. I never considered that before. So, guns can't be evil, only money is evil!

Perhaps in the future I will suggest that, and might even offer to rid evil from all the do-gooder gun-grabbers.
