ADD/ADHD
Anyone here ADD or ADHD?
I was diagnosed ADHD as a kid in middle school. Took the medication for several years. I still notice times where I can't pay attention or get too hyper. I used to have to have music blaring to do my homework, I'd fly right through it. To this day, I still cannot focus without music in the background. I find that I have music constantly playing everyday.
Why do the drugs, mainly uppers, have an opposite effect on Hyperactive children? I haven't been on the meds for 4-5 years now. But I notice that when I have a few cups of coffee or an energy drink, I'm ultra calm and focused. Anyone else the same way?
Strange, isn't it?

I was not diagnosed as a kid... but if you ask my mom she'll tell you that I had all the symptoms.
During the third grade, I spent nearly every afternoon in the principal's office. By the time I was in tenth grade, I was in detention almost daily -- to the point where if I didn't have detention, they were concerned.
I have a tough time concentrating. I can do it, it simply requires my taking enough mini-breaks (a few minutes is all I need) to reset my ability to concentrate. The fact that I came out of my MBA studies with a perfect GPA just amazes me because it is something that I considered myself smart enough to do, just not something I thought I could ever accomplish due to my shorter attention span. The reading is truly what gave me the most problems -- I'd find that I'd have to read the same pages over and over (just like I did in high school and college) to simply gain an understanding of the subject material. If there was something -- ANYTHING -- to distract me, it took priority.
Of course, much of my success depended on writing volumes of paper, and writing is one of the few things that I can accomplish without taking a break and truly apply myself.0 -
This may have helped [:D]

Not sure why stimulants have the paradoxical effect on ADD/ADHD people. Has to do with brain chemistry, I assume.
While he's never been diagnosed, I believe Rcrx has ADHD. He has 2 speeds, run with the throttle wide open, and sleep...0 -
the stimulants speed up the portion of the brain that needs to be stimulated in order to allow you to stay focused... a solution without drugs that seems to work as others suggested is breaking up your tasks into smaller blocks of concentration time followed by a short break, and of course the normal organizational things we all may need to do like writing yourself reminder notes so you don't forget what needs to be done... 0 -

I had ADD...ONCE! My father put my head through the sheet rock wall, and I never had a problem again of not paying attention.[;)]
That actually explains quite a bit.0
