Damaged 870/20 stock -- advice wanted
Ack. I was dove hunting this morning, the skeeters were so horrible that I doused myself with bug spray. Unfortunately, I got some on the palms of my hands and then handled my new Remington 870 Express, and the finish on the stock immediately "melted" -- I guess there's kerosene or something else that can strip the finish.
The stock LOOKS okay, but it is tacky as hell to the point that it takes tremendous effort to remove your hands from the stock.
Can I simply apply something to remove the tackiness, or must the stock be stripped and refinished? If it has to be stripped, how do you remove the finish on the checkered portion of the wood?
Again, this is a new gun, and apparently locating stocks for the 20-gauge model isn't so easy (as I'm discovering)... I like this gun and I'd like to keep it.

So, the finish isn't damaged, only softened?
No guarantees, but I have had some luck getting soft, slow-to-cure finishes to harden by placing the stock outdoors in the hot direct sunshine for a day or two.0 -

Im certain the finish on an express is some type of quick sprayed laquerish finish they get in 50 gallon drums. IM pretty sure they dont use walnut wood either. If it were mine id strip the finish off with a quick paste stripper (15 minutes). After you get all of the old finish off, wash it off and let it dry in the sun. Then you might have to stain it back to match the original color (use water base stain only). Then put a coat of tru oil on everything and let it dry for a day. Repeat tru oil next day and go hunting. Now if you mess it up again you can easily fix it.

Thanks. So if I'm going to strip the thing down using a paste stripper that you recommend using, can I choose any color I want (such as a green), or should I find a color that closely resembles the original? I'm just figuring if the stock is going to be stripped, maybe I should choose a more appealing color. Is that possible?

After you take the finish off of it you can paint it if you want. can you show me the origianl finish. Ive only seen them in black synthetic and walnut stained birch. If its the birch you can stain it any color you want, just use water base stain with no finish in it. Let the stain soak into for 10 minutes before you wipe it off. let it dry a full day before you use the tru oil. Or Camo paint it!![8D]0 -
Go to Wal-Mart and get the Birchwood Casey Complete Tru-Oil Stock Finish Kit and some Varnish Stripper. Just follow the instructions and it should turn out good. 0 -
It seem's the stock for the 7600 rifle will fit the 20 ga.

Try rubbing alcohol. I have the same problem. Them I use fine steel wool and Tru-Oil, several coats. Get any doves?? 0 -

Honestly, the mosquitoes were so horrible that my hunting buddy and I decided to just end it early today. I've never seen anything like this before, and I grew up in Florida where the mosquito is the state bird and also lived in Wisconsin. You simply couldn't concentrate on the hunt because you were forever swatting at the clouds of bugs.
My brush pants, tan in color, were totally black with them. It was the freakiest thing I've ever seen.0 -

That wikipedia article is a bit unclear. Rather than spending a ton on a stock that might not fit, I'd rather be sure than sorry.0 -

Don't do this with an 870 Express stock as the sunlight WILL MELT the finish.
My 870 Express melted from sitting in the sun. Biggest POS the big green R ever sent out the door. One more reason Reminton is going out of business.0 -
Spoke to the folks over at Gander Mtn today where I bought the Remington... they said the finish should NOT do this, even with bug spray, and that Remington is very good about this sort of stuff and will take it back and do it for free under warranty.
The bad news is that I won't see my gun for at least four months.
But, it'll be done right at the factory for free... I can't beat that!0
