Advice wanted - dog boots

Ack! I'm so *&^%ing confused.

I'm wanting to get some dog boots for my Springer Spaniel when we go hunting. I don't know if I need two seperate pairs of boots -- one for summer and one for ice/snow, or if I can get one good all-around pair of boots.

Every time I think I've found a boot that would work, I read the reviews and they say, for instance, that Bass Pro's boots fall apart quickly, that PetSmart/PetCo's boots come off too easily and get lost, Cabela's offers a ton of choices that are simply confusing, and that no boot will protect against cactus needles.

I want a set of boots for summer for dove hunting. There can be some nasty rocks and cactus and thorny plants. I realize I can't protect the dog from everything, but I'd like to offer a sporting chance (pardon the pun) to him.

In the winter, with ducks and pheasant, I'd like to offer him the ability to not get snow balling up under his feet, etc.

So, does anyone have any good experience with boots, and, if so, what do you recommend?

    I have absolutely no experience with doggie boots, because we have no
    real need for them here in the Ozarks. But if I couldn't easily find
    some to fit the bill, I would make them - specifically for my personal
    needs. Surely it can't be that difficult.

    I can't sew worth a damn. So, for me it would be difficult.

    You will not be graded on neatness. Down right ugly won't
    even matter, as long as it serves the purpose.

    We quit putting them on our pointers.Its impossible to stop cactus needels.They dident stay on to well either.

    that's what I've read.

    What about in the snow, though. I would think they'd do well keeping ice out of their paws.

    During the summer, I'm wondering about burrs and stuff that would get in their paws. I'm just thinking that if I'm out in the field hunting, I don't want to be stopping every time the dog steps on a burr.

    We put the winter shoes on Purdy sometimes just to watch her walk funny. Has your dog ever worn them....its hard to train them to use them. (At least it is with Purdy...she NEVER will just "wear" them.)

    No, he's never worn them. Cabela's website suggests putting on one and letting the dog walk around with it until he gets used to it, and at that point, you can put on the other three and he should do fine.

    We plan on bringing out the camera though when he gets to try them out -- everyone says it is a riot.

    The funniest I have seen was on TV...some full sized white Poodle boucing around like a kangaroo. Purdy just high steps it around the place! We never have gotten them for Huggy D Bear....but that would be hillarious for certain.

    I have a buddy that swore by ones that he got at REI and used them on several dogs. I can't however tell you if they were the REI brand or one the carried. I can tell you that REI equipment is top notch and they don't carry junk. www.rei.com

    No cactus in Iowa,the hollow stem of switch grass is a different story however.Very similar to a hypodermic needle but have only had trouble with it 1 time.I can relate to the balled up snow an the Springer as dad has 1 of those bouncers.I've tried Cabelas boots on my lab and he just shakes them off after they fill up with snow.Sorry I can't give you a better report

    I got snake lizard ostrich cowhide stingray boots but I aint got no dog boots are they expensive can I get some that look like a rottweiler?

    This may be of some help. If you find boots that you like you can keep them on like I did for one of my Bullmastiff's that had a huge allergy problem. Dog allergies manifest usually by insestent paw licking. She would lick until the paw pads were bleeding. A trip to the doc would medicate to get rid of any infection. They would get bandaged up but they needed air to develop new hard pads. I went to the store and bought a 6-pac of kids socks and secured them with suspenders. I tried tape but that didn't work. She had full mobility with the suspenders and they stayed on. Sure the neighbor dogs looked briefly but at 26" and 125# there were no dog teasing comments from them!

    Forget the chain stores and go to Bill Boatman & Co. for your dog supplies. That's all they do and they do it very well. The good service will make your head spin.
