FAA allow airlines to test cell phones on planes
I don't have a link, this was something that I read in the paper when we were out in Wisconsin. Apparently, there are three or four airlines, mostly foreign (but flying in the US) that are going to allow passengers to use cell phones in the air. Not the expensive phones in the back of the seat in front of you, but your own, personal cell phone.
It is bad enough when I have to listen to some moron scream his conversation in the phone while waiting to board the plane. It is even worse when that moron sits next to me or in my immediate vicinity and needs to call every human being he knows to tell him that he's about to take off.
I realize that business travelers will find this a boon because it will allow them to be productive while in the air for two or three hours. But, what about the people around him or her? Is that fair to passengers paying hundreds of dollars each for a seat to be tortured with endless conversations? Do I really want to hear a teenager chatter for the entire flight with something along the lines of this?
TEEN: So, like, there was this time, like, do you think she likes me? Really? I like her. Are you sure she likes me? Did you ask her friend? No. Yes. NO! YES! REALLY? COOL! That's so cool. THAT IS SO COOL. DUDE, that's so cool. That rocks. Cool. Dude! No way! NO F*CKING WAY! Dude! Man, she's cool, and her body is tight. Yes, it is. Tattoos are cool on chicks. Hers is. It is on her ass. I saw it. Dude, I'm telling you I saw it. It is cool. Dude! Cool!
or the business guy trying to finish his deal, trying to act all tough...
or the woman who needs to spend an entire flight gossipping...
It is bad enough that people drive with a phone attached to their ear all the time, torturing us while weaving in and out of traffic, not signaling for turns, riding our tails, etc.
Is this a good idea, or do others feel the same way that I do?

cell phones don't really work that well at 30,000-40,000 feet and while traveling at a speed of 4-500mph. Cell phone towers are not designed to recieve those signals. Do you fly frequently? The phones are already in place on most aircraft. Most people who use them are business people, next up on the list is calls made to let someone know that the plane will be delayed/rerouted/ or late to the scheduled destination. The FAA is not concerned with every passengers comfort, they just want to make sure you get from point "A" to point "B" safely.
It's also interesting to see your perception of the typical teenage boy.0 -

I understand that the FAA isn't interested in passenger comfort. I'm just sounding off because I can't stand the idea of having to listen to someone's telephone conversation the entire time.
If enough "air rage" cases appear due to "overuse" of cell phones in the cabin, perhaps the FAA would consider it a safety issue just as they have with banning smoking from all US flights.
Yes, those built-in phones are used by business people. They're also very expensive to use.
I'm not sure that the airlines are going to care all that much about ensuring passenger comfort -- they stopped demonstrating that capability years ago, I don't see why this would be anything different.0
