    Well of course the 44 Special is a much milder round. I have loaded it for years to shoot in an indoor range in my 44 mag handgun. The 44 special is nice for target work and protection. The 44 mag is too hot for defense, in my opinion. I just keeps going and going unless it hits something damn hard to make it expand.

    You can get some pretty hot 44 special stuff too, Cor-Bon used to make some defensive stuff that was nice for that purpose. I have a Taurus 44 special five shot revolver that I use for defense on occasion.

    For hunting in your marlin the only way to go is with the 44 mag. Either round will work in the Marlin.
