We bought this one new in November of 1998. It was just the two of us and it's 2100 square feet. Josh moved in with us after his divorce and has been here 3 years now. Still, 2100 square feet is more than enough room.
I owe less than $10,000 on this one, and was really looking forward to no mortgage payment. Looks like I was living in that dream world again!
PS, I'll bet money she's thinking I'll give this house to Josh and buy another one. She's dreaming! I'll sell this one and roll the money into a new one, or I won't sell! I'm retiring soon even if she doesn't like it![}:)]0 -

This is the very reason my wife and I sold a couple of houses and decided to buy a Condo with only two bedrooms. This helps the kids understand that they are on their own and can't keep coming back to the well for a free ride.
The best lesson you can teach your children is to stand on their own two feet. I tell them I love them very much and they are always welcome to join us for a meal, but to get a job and earn their own way. They can stay with us in an emergency for a few days but after that its back to the big bad cruel world.0 -
You gotta be nuts to sell a house you owe 10K on!! Keep the house, tell the kid to get out,.......3 years is long enough, and do a little remodeling to keep her happy. I just paid mine off, and there is no way in heck, that I will start over again with home prices the way they are. It would cost me 375K, to get into a house like I just paid off.

This is a tough one if you and your wife have different views. If you are currently in the house that you would like to retire in, get it paid off and then retire. Mortgage payments and retirement just don't go together. Besides, when you are retired with no mortgage payments you have more money for your hobbies. If you feel you have to make the move, be careful in the current market and perhaps reassess your retirement plans. 0 -

Hey with the big fat retirement check you will get from "H" and your social security "$500" per month will be a walk in the park. You might even have some money left over each month for some gas for the Honda![:D]0
