    I think pain would qualify.

With the way they were dropped and thrown about like they were
toys, I'd imagine there's going to be a lot of pain involved.

One reporter said when he met the first of the injured it was a little
girl of 11 lying on her back screaming in agony ... yelling that she
    could not move her legs.

I'd imagine there's quite a bit of that - lots of internal injuries.

Of course i can understand those in horrific pain screaming, but i gotr a mental picture of people standing aorund screaming for reasons other than pain..

Drop a bridge out from under me, and I will probably go down yelling.

Belive me, I won't much care if you think it is useless.

Other than as a very small child - <3 - I don't believe I've ever screamed in my life.

Done some pretty spirited yelling, though. I have been through some dramatic stuff, also - earthquakes, hurricanes, car accidents, gunfire, fires, tornadoes, broken bones, and a lot of fistfights.

I also don't think I've ever heard any of my relatives scream - including my assorted wives during childbirth.

    Curious.

Curious indeed. I may do some research to see what a psychological professional's opinion may be on this matter.

Ok, i did just that, and after three pages of google: the most reasonable explantion i could find is that it is an "Anxiety Disorder".

I was only curious, and have often wondered about screamers. You know, like when women see a mouse or a snake.

Anxiety Disorder, i guess kind of explains it..to some degree.

A sudden fright or shock is not an anxiety disorder which is more chronic and less acute that a bridge falling out from under you.

"An involuntary cry escaped his lips."

I always thought that was a pretty whacky thing for an author to say until one day it happened to me. I saw something that startled me and I hollered. It took me a couple seconds to realize it was me that had made the noise.

Sreaming in fear is an instinctive thing. Your post reminds me of the old saying, "If you can keep your head and stay calm while everyone around you is panicking, you probably don't understand the situation."

Does "Oooooooh, chiiiiiiit" qualify as a scream? Not trying to be funny, but that's what would come out of me if a bridge fell out from under me.

In a crisis, women will generally scream, rather than doing something constructive.
I am not sure why they are wired that way, and I do not find it an appealling characteristic.

Allen, I have seen women zing into action doing the right, necessary stuff, while men stood around befuddled during emergencies. Especially medical emergencies.

Obviously you haven;t met my ex-wife and two daughters.

So in y'alls experience, women handle emergencies better than men?
That is a new one to me, and I have been involved in plenty of life and death emergencies.
In my experience, the women stand around screaming while the men get to work.

That would be me too, and i don't consider it the same as a scream. Maybe t's nothing more than a variance in the way each express themselves.
