Back in the day, I'll guess the late 50's or early 60's there was a hemp rope factory in Earlville, Illinois. They used the stem and piled the leaves up outside the back to rot. Dad said Mexicans would come out from the canneries on weekends and just lie in the rotting leaves smoking pot. Locals didn't understand the attraction at the time.

You probably wouldn't even want to start. What do crop dusters use when they spray for hippies?

I thought at one time they were trying to develop a hybrid of hemp that would take the joy out of smoking it. Anyone else hear that? I know it has been a issue here in Iowa a few years back, farmers wanting to grow it, but haven't heard anything lately.

Hemp won't get you high, there is no THC in it. However, the guvmint uses the argument because the petroleum lobby is opposed to hemp farming. It's another stupid rationalization from our elected leaders. Somebody might be able to get a placebo high from it, but, it really doesn't work. Midwest ditches are full of the stuff and it is worthless.

apparently they have bred it to take out the wacky part of the tabacky.

    Rope a dope.

Given the fact that when you go to buy rope you can only find "plastic" and derivatives, the good old hemp rope would be nice to purchase again. Was good stuff, along with the twine they used to bale twine with.

My grandpa grew it during WW II. Now they can't get rid of it. It's just a weed. You would have to smoke an awful lot of it to get high.
Might as well smoke corn silk instead.

The fear that it would be used as a cover for marijuana crops is a canard. Back when tobacco allotments were in acreage, the Feds didn't have any problem knowing you had a tenth of an acre too much and sending somebody out to watch you plow it under. If they could do that, I don't think there would be any problem noticing an acre of nonstandard hemp.

I did not apply for a permit, but I was asked to do it. I decided I have enough trouble staying focused and all the snack breaks!!! I could never get any work done:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070206/ap_on_re_us/hemp_licenses

ND To Issue Permits to grow Hemp.

quote:Johnson asked the DEA in December to waive its $2,293 registration fee, but federal officials rejected that request. Johnson said he will hand-deliver Hauge's and Monson's applications when he meets with DEA officials in Washington early next week to try again to persuade them to relax the annual fee requirement.

North Dakota is one of seven states that have authorized industrial hemp farming. The others are Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana and West Virginia, according to Vote Hemp, an industrial hemp advocacy organization based in Bedford, Mass.

$2,293 annually for a permit to grow it. That seems pretty darn ridiculous to me.

I really don't see what the big deal is. Hemp was grown in North America commercially for 300 years.

Commerical hemp has so little THC in it, you might as well be smoking rope.

While it probably possible to sneak a coupla marijuana plants in your field of hemp, so what? People have been doing that in the corner of their cornfields for years. You're never going to generate huge illegal outdoor fields of drug-quality marijuana in the USA because you could never keep those a secret.

And you probably wouldn't even want to sneak a coupla pot plants in with your hemp because the pollen from the hemp will pollinate the marijuana, ruining it.

    Now *this* is hemp farming:

My grandfather grew it in the 40's as well..."Hemp for the War!"

It's still growing wild around here...but I always feel happy after I get done mowing it...and REALLY crave Doritos...[8D]

It might be ditchweed, but there is still demand for it around here. I've told the stories before. People occasionally pop up to harvest it around Labor Day.

Back in the 70's Dad found a truckload woven into the fence to dry. He called the Sheriff and asked what he should do with it. Sheriff said "Burn it". SO he took it out into an open field at another farm to do it.

Grandfather was head of maintenance at a community college in Rockford. He told a story about back in the 60's where they were in the process of building the place they cut down a hay rack load of the wee. They had to have a guy on top of the hay rack with a pitch fork to keep the students from stealing the stuff. Got a little crazy I guess.

Could you pass those brownies man?

The name of this song is 'The Wildwood Flower'
Now 'The Wildwood Flower' is an old country classic
It gained a whole new popularity
The song isn't any more popular
But the flower is doin' real good

The wildwood flower grew wild on the farm
And we never knowed what it was called
Some said it was a flower and some said it was weed
I didn't gave it much thought...
One day I was out there talking to my brother
Reached down for a weed to chew on
Things got fuzzy and things got blurry
    And then everything was gone
    I Didn't know what happened
But I knew it beat the hell out of sniffin' burlap

I come to and my brother was there
And he said, 'What's wrong with your eyes?'
    I said, 'I don't know, I was chewing on a weed'
He said, 'Let me give it a try'
We spent the rest of that day and most of that night
Trying to find my brother, Bill
Caught up with him 'bout six o'clock the next mornin'
    Naked, swinging on the windmill
He said he flew up there
I had to fly up and get him down
    He was about half crazy

The very next day we picked a bunch of them weeds
And put 'em in the sun to dry
Then we mashed 'em up and we cleaned 'em all
And put 'em in the corncob pipe
Smokin' them wildwood flowers got to be a habit
    We didn't see no harm
We thought it was kind of handy
Take a trip and never leave the farm

A big ol' puff on the wildwood weed
    Next thing you know
We's just wandering behind the little animals
All good things gotta come to an end
And it's the same with the wildwood weed

One day this feller from Washington come by
And he spied us and he turned white as a sheet
And he dug and he burned
And he burned and he dug
And he killed all our cute little weeds
    Then he drove away
    We just smiled and waved
Sittin' there on that sack of seeds

daughter lived in N Cental Kansas. "Ditchweed" grew wild- in the ditches. Naturalized from when they were growing hemp for rope in WW II. One 5 ton truck of that stuff will give you the same buzz as a joint of modern day grass, which was bred for high THC content. It (ditchweed) LOOKS like drug quality grass- which is part of the problem.

I know someone that hauled a pickup (with racks) load of that across two states. If they'd have gotten caught, they'd still
    be in the big house.[8D]
