I have a pair like each of these. The top (Merrell's) are my favorite. Both brands make excellent, durable & comfortable shoes.[^]

I've got a pair of Rockport's that my FIL gave me. They are by far the most comfortable casual shoe I have ever had. I, too, have worn steel toe boots all my working days. Not a lot of experience with casuals, but I would wear the Rockports all day every day if I could.
    Congrats on the new job.
    Joke:
Do you know the difference in Cowboy boots and Engineer boots?

With cowboy boots, the B.S. is on the outside.[8D]

+1 on the Rockports. I have a pair with rubber soles. They feel like wearing tennis shoes..Very Comfortable. And they don't slip & slide like the others..

    Alden Chukka Boots.

I almost bought a pair, but I went for Alden 405 'Indy Boots' instead. The 405s are the most comfortable boots right out of the box I've ever bought. I wore the Chukka Boots in the shop for half an hour, and I didn't want to take them off. (I was wearing Timberland shoes that day.) The Chukkas will go better with my office attire (but the 405s also look good with khaki trousers), so I'll get a pair eventually.

Nothing says "hey, I'm a casual engineer" like a pair of Birkenstocks.

I am an engineer and Rockport shoes have been a mainstay in my wardrobe for years. I like the Rockport Signature Dressport Wingtip Oxford. Lace up with Vibram soles and wingtip uppers. One pair in black and another in cordovan.

Aren't these always sold with breast suppressors and plaid flannel shirts?

for casual I'll take my Dr. Martens all day half the time I dont even know I have them on about $50.00. For dressing up, if you can find Stacy Adams I think there a lot more comfy then florshiems, and they shine up real nice.

I buy 100% Redwing shoes for the office, work, outdoors, everything. They never let me down ever. If you do go with an office or casual Redwing, don't forget to replace the insole when they start feeling uncomfortable. They should always feel good. I replace the insole about once every year for 15 bucks. The outsides wear very nicely and don't get all scuffed up.
