When you are doing nothing at all with the computer but you see the processor and hard drive are getting a workout, how can you find out what is running and who is running it?

I use Microsoft Office 2007 (Microsoft Word and Excel). When I installed Office 2007 I was using Microsoft Works 2000 (Word Processor and Spreadsheet). I didn't know if there would be a conflict between them so I cleaned out Microsoft Works before I installed Microsoft Office.
Now I have the same problem in reverse. I have some archived files that Office 2007 can't open because they are written in Works 2000.
If I install Works 2000 with Office 2007 installed will my computer explode or what?0 -
Trying to list a couple pistols on the auction side tonight.
For some reason the photos will not go from my hard-drive and load.
I get a window stating.

How do you tell what your CPU is doing and why?
My hard drive light is on SOLID for a LONG time, the computer is running SLOW. I don't have anything running that I am aware of that would slow this down that much.

The ol puter here wasn't acting right, so I took it to the shop. They removed some "rogue items" and defrag hard drive.
Anyway, now everything's BIG!
I can only see a few threads. Everything is like all stretched.
Page size at the bottomis 100%. Text size is medium. Appearence and themes font size is normal.

I use my lcd tv as a monitor when watching movies on the computer. For some reason it quit working. I have here sound but not video. what would cause this to happen. also the built in mouse pad quit working i had to switch over to a usb mouse but the tv still worked as a monitor after the mouse quit woring. Just stopped today when i tried putting a movie on for my wife. 0 -
Someone gave me a laptop that has windows vista on it. Problem is the person that put vista on it didn't have the code and of course it shut down after 30 days. I can get into safe mode. What would it take to put a legal vista on it? If I can repair it my grand son will get it. 0 -
Down loaded ie8 about four weeks ago and have had nothing but trouble since. Main thing is a very slow computer. I can reset and it speeds up for a couple of hours. I think I was running ie6 and was happy but bought into the newer/better thing. If I delete ie8 will ie6 still be there? 0 -

For what you want to do, you'll need to run a DOD wipe and reinstall your operating system or just replace the disk.
I think the Norton utility named GDisk has DOD wipe on it.0 -
yep, what jamesrk said. you need to write zeros across the whole drive, anything less and it can all be recovered relatively easy. 0 -
There are very few good programs on the market to do what Buschmaster has said. Unfortunately Norton Ghost is not one of them. With the correct hardware, almost any hard disk is recoverable. If the system is a factor made type machine, ex: Dell, HP, ect, then I would take the hard drive out and either use it in another computer or take a sledge hammer to it.

The only sure way of getting rid of all the info. on your hard drive, is to physically destroy it. You can clean it, but the information that was stored on it, still exists to some degree. 0 -

if you run a DOD wipe, it writes random numbers all over the drive 7 times over, and that has been determined by the US Department Of Defense to be adequate to completely obliterate whatever data was on the hard drive.
they don't call it a "DOD wipe" for nothing. it's a certified, standardized method of erasing hard drives. the US Department Of Defense standard for this procedure is 5220.22-M if you want to look it up.
not even an electron microscope can retreive any ghost images of data that was on the disks before the process. the data is gone. gone, gone, gone.
there aren't many such programs. there doesn't need to be, how many do you want? they are readily available. I have one such program and use it often. you can download one and use it too.
if that's what you want to do, that's what you need.0 -
Norton Wipe Info is what you're looking for. It does the DoD wipe, although you want to make sure you have it turned up to full settings. It came with my version of Norton Utilities. I have 2005 Premier. Not sure whether it comes on the lesser versions or not. Good luck! 0
