Pocket Gun for Summer CCW
Well summer is fast on its way and I'm looking for a small "pocket gun" for a ccw piece.
I'm leaning towards a S&W J-frame of some type, but can't decide because I know next to nothing about them.
Suggestions anyone?

That be my choice also.[:)]0 -
I think you should just stick this
in your pants, shorts or swimsuit and pretend it's not there. Then just tell everyone you meet how very happy you are to see them. They'll just think you're a swell guy, or that you buy male enhancement products by the bucketfull.0 -
Thanks for the info guys.
I have a few more questions about the 642. First, are there different models, like a shrouded hammer vs. exposed hammer?
Is there a seperate "Airweight" model? I see some listed on the auction as "Airweights"
Last question, and this one might sound stupid......is there something I could find around the house that is comparable in weight to one?0 -

This is a little Colt Mustang that I bought at a pawn shop for $150. The poor little thing didn't even function, and was in pretty rough shape. I took it to Mike Johnson's Shooting Specialties here in Montana, and this is what I got back. Novak night sites, coco bolo grips, jeweled hammer and chamber, stippled front strap, stainless full length guide rod, and a hand built aluminum trigger. Everything was then tacool itlly beveled and ceramic coated. The only thing I would have done different is checker the front strap instead of stippling it. All in all, you just can't beat it!!0 -
I guess my fingers got ahead of my brain...thats supposed to say tastefully!! 0 -

Kahr PM-9 I carry it in my back pocket on occasion and it is NOT too heavy. Size and width is small and compact.
Ditto except I go with a .40.0 -
Here are the more common J-frames-
Regular Hammer
36-Chiefs special
37-airweight chiefs special
60-stainless chiefs special
637-airweight stainless chiefs special
Shrouded hammer
49-bodyguard
38-airweight bodyguard
649-stainless bodyguard
638-airweight stainless bodyguard
Hammerless
40-older collectible centennial hammerless w/grip safety
42-older collectible airweight centennial hammerless w/grip safety
640-stainless centennial
642-airweight stainless centennial
340-airweight centennial w/scandium frame as mentioned above
There are a couple of others-like 940-9mm stainless centennial but the ones i listed above are the more common ones-the last 2 digits usually designates if it is a chiefs special-(regular hammer) or bodyguard-(shrouded hammer) or Centennial (hammerless). good luck!0 -
GUNFUNCO, thanks for the info.
I'm pretty much settled on the 642. Thanks to everyone who provided me with information. This will be the most informed firearm purchase I've made in years.
Now, any suggestions for grips, holsters, ect??? I'm thinking about getting a set of laser grips, but the pricing on them is kinda steep0 -
Get a .22 Derringer. 0 -

[:0] You mean a "Saturday Night Special"?!?!
Surely you don't advocate a responsible firearms owner buying one of those low-priced killers. I've been told that merely holding one of those "junk guns" will turn me into a feather-boa wearing crack dealer.

You forgot to add a [sarcasm] tag to the beginning of your post, so it didn't work. It should start with a [sarcasm] tag and end with a [/sarcasm] tag. This should make it work and ensure we'll understand you meant to be sarcastic. [:D]0 -
I didn't forget, I'm just lazy....
Besides, if they miss the "sarcasm" tag and the smiley face they are too stupid to get the joke anyways0 -
I know, I know...I was just trying to be funny myself. I apparently failed dismally.... 0 -
[:D]
Look at the bright side.....at least you've managed to divert attention away from my question.0 -
Oh. That wasn't really my goal. Kahr PM40 or 642 is my answer then [:D] 0
